Corporate bond buyers chase $5-billion 30-year deals. Issuers stay home.

Long-dated supply hits four-year low while oversubscription ratios triple, compressing credit spreads into Treasury territory.

Long-dated corporate bond issuance fell to 18% of total volume in Q1 2025, the smallest share since late 2020, while investor demand for 30-year paper reached 5x oversubscription on recent benchmark deals. Corporate treasurers are refusing the bid.

Investment-grade issuers placed $87 billion in bonds with maturities beyond 20 years during the first quarter, down from $142 billion in the same period last year. Meanwhile, allocations on recent 30-year tranches from Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan were cut to 19% and 22% of orders, respectively. The spread compression is mechanical: when $25 billion chases $5 billion of supply, credit premia vanish. Long-dated IG spreads tightened 38 basis points since December, now trading at +127 bps over Treasuries, the tightest level since February 2022.

The mismatch reflects duration convictions, not credit appetite. Insurance companies and pension funds extended duration targets after the Fed's March pivot signaled a probable easing cycle beginning Q3. Liability-matching mandates drove $61 billion into long-duration credit funds year-to-date, according to EPFR. But corporate finance officers see the same curve and draw the opposite conclusion: why lock in 5.8% all-in yields for three decades when the forward curve prices 4.2% refinancing rates by 2027? They are betting on cheaper money 18 months out.

Petroleum refiners and utilities, traditionally the largest long-duration issuers, have been conspicuously absent. The energy sector placed zero bonds beyond 25 years in March, the first blank month since 2020. Instead, they are tapping $119 billion in near-term Treasury issuance this week to meet immediate funding needs, then waiting. The result is a technical distortion: credit is pricing like duration risk has disappeared, but only because corporations refuse to sell it.

Allocators should watch for forced supply in two windows. First, the $340 billion refinancing wall hitting investment-grade energy and industrials between September and December 2025. Second, regulatory capital requirements pushing European banks to term out funding before Basel III endgame rules take effect in January 2026. If either cohort blinks and issues into current demand, spreads will gap 60-80 bps wider in a single session. The technical works until it doesn't.

The tell will be whether Goldman or Morgan Stanley pre-markets a $3-billion 30-year tranche in May earnings season. If corporate finance teams still decline, the bid is real but the supply drought is structural.

The takeaway
Long-duration corporate credit compresses 38 bps on 5x oversubscription while issuers wait for cheaper refinancing, creating violent reversal risk at the $340-billion maturity wall.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.

Built by the craft floor — apparel, media, packaging, and secure print.
This trade runs on hands, not desks. Imprint manufacturing & Komori heritage press through approved vendors · Canon high-speed secure-media operations is a craft floor — genuine Six Sigma discipline applied to ink, thread, foil, and registration, where a hundredth of an inch is the difference between a brand that reads serious and one that reads cheap. Beyond our own Virginia Beach floor, we work with a vetted network of craft manufacturers across the US — each meeting the highest excellence in QC standards in the industry, each a specialist in its own discipline — so apparel, hard-goods imprinting, media manufacturing, packaging, and secure printing all go to the bench built for them, coordinated from one accountable hub.
