Emerging Markets Break Seven-Quarter Lag, Four Funds Upgraded as Dollar Weakens 15%

Oaktree, Fidelity, and peers benefiting from first sustained EM outperformance since Q2 2022; allocators rotating back.

Emerging-market equity funds received four rating upgrades in the first quarter of 2025, the highest cluster since late 2021, as the asset class posted its first sustained outperformance against developed markets in seven quarters. The MSCI Emerging Markets Index gained 8.2% year-to-date through March, outpacing the S&P 500's 4.1% in dollar terms. Oaktree Emerging Markets Equity Fund and Fidelity Fundamental Emerging Markets ETF were among the upgraded vehicles, both benefiting from manager skill in navigating the volatile 2024 base.

The shift follows 15% depreciation in the DXY dollar index from its October 2024 peak, easing the currency headwind that suppressed EM returns since the 2022 rate-hike cycle began. Local-currency debt instruments tied to EM equities saw parallel inflows: $3.8 billion net into dedicated EM bond funds in January and February, the strongest two-month stretch since mid-2021. Lower global rate pressures—US 10-year yields dropped from 4.7% to 4.1% over the period—reduced the opportunity cost of holding EM exposure, particularly in Asia ex-Japan allocations.

Fund upgrades signal more than momentum. Morningstar's analyst-driven ratings incorporate forward assessments of manager process and portfolio construction, not trailing returns alone. The four upgraded funds demonstrated consistent stock selection in undervalued sectors—Taiwan semiconductors, Indian financials, Brazilian infrastructure—while avoiding the overleveraged Chinese property names that dragged peer benchmarks. Oaktree's distressed-equity tilt proved particularly effective: the fund's 22% allocation to restructuring plays in South Korea and Indonesia outperformed broader EM by 740 basis points in Q4 2024, providing the performance cushion that supported its March upgrade.

Allocators are responding. Family offices and endowments, underweight EM since 2022, added $11.2 billion to active EM equity mandates in Q1 2025, the first quarterly net inflow above $10 billion since Q2 2021. The rotation is structural, not tactical: multi-asset portfolios holding less than 5% EM exposure—common among US-centric allocators—are revisiting 8-10% target bands as valuations compress. The MSCI EM forward price-to-earnings ratio sits at 11.4x, a 28% discount to the S&P 500's 15.8x, near the widest gap in a decade.

Watch refinancing cycles in Turkey and Argentina, where sovereign debt trades at distressed levels despite equity market strength. Any default or restructuring announcements before June will test whether fund managers can isolate corporate performance from sovereign risk, a core skill differentiating upgraded funds from peers. Also watch Federal Reserve commentary through May: a hawkish pivot that strengthens the dollar above 105 on the DXY would reverse much of the EM tailwind, particularly for funds with unhedged currency exposure.

The four upgrades represent $18.3 billion in combined assets under management, small against the $1.7 trillion global EM equity universe but meaningful as sentiment markers. Allocators who ignored EM for three years are now asking which managers survived the drought with process intact. The answer is in the upgrade list.

The takeaway
First quarterly EM fund upgrade cluster since 2021; $11.2B inflows signal allocator rotation after seven-quarter underperformance.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.

Built by the craft floor — apparel, media, packaging, and secure print.
This trade runs on hands, not desks. Imprint manufacturing & Komori Press · Canon high-speed secure-media operations is a craft floor — genuine Six Sigma discipline applied to ink, thread, foil, and registration, where a hundredth of an inch is the difference between a brand that reads serious and one that reads cheap. POPS4 is built by exactly those operators: independent, boots-on-the-ground engineers who carry their own book, read a client in microseconds, and put their name on every run. Beyond our own Virginia Beach floor, we work with a vetted network of craft manufacturers across the US — each meeting the highest excellence in QC standards in the industry, each a specialist in its own discipline — so apparel, hard-goods imprinting, media manufacturing, packaging, and secure printing all go to the bench built for them, coordinated from one accountable hub. Short-run from twenty-five units, volume to five hundred thousand. Two hundred authorized national brands, seventy thousand SKUs with virtual proofing on every one. Art archived for instant reorders.
