Flex Acquires EPC Power in $300M+ Play for AI Data Center Power Stack

The contract manufacturer moves upstream into wide-bandgap silicon carbide conversion as hyperscalers demand custom rack-level power density.

Flex Ltd. announced the acquisition of EPC Power, a privately held designer of high-efficiency power conversion systems, in a transaction that shifts the contract manufacturer from assembly work into the signal path between grid and chip. The deal, undisclosed but estimated by market participants at north of $300 million, brings EPC's silicon carbide-based inverters and DC-DC converters directly into Flex's hyperscale data center customer stack. EPC has been shipping ruggedized units for utility-scale battery storage since 2018 and started piloting liquid-cooled rack power modules with two Tier-1 cloud providers in mid-2023.

Flex has been a Tier-1 supplier to Microsoft, Meta, and AWS for over a decade, manufacturing compute sleds, optical transceivers, and rear-of-rack switches at facilities in Malaysia, Mexico, and Texas. Revenue from hyperscale customers crossed $8.2 billion in fiscal 2024, up 22% year-over-year, but gross margin compression to 6.1% reflected pricing pressure on commodity builds. EPC gives Flex owned intellectual property in the one subsystem where margin still lives: the conversion stage between 480V AC utility feeds and the 48V DC rails that power GPU clusters. EPC's silicon carbide MOSFETs deliver 98.5% conversion efficiency at rack densities approaching 150 kW, a figure that matters when a single H100 training pod consumes 10.2 MW and every wasted watt becomes $180 annually in cooling and infrastructure cost.

The timing reflects a structural shift in data center capex allocation. Hyperscalers spent $231 billion on infrastructure in 2024, with $89 billion directed toward AI-specific builds, according to Synergy Research. Power delivery now accounts for 18-22% of total facility cost, up from 9-11% in the pre-transformer era, because legacy switched-mode power supplies cannot handle the instantaneous load spikes from synchronized gradient updates across distributed training runs. EPC's modular architecture allows sub-5-millisecond transient response and N+2 redundancy without oversizing the upstream utility connection, which in constrained grid regions like Northern Virginia and Dublin cuts 9-14 months off site commissioning timelines. Flex can now bid on the full rack integration contract rather than splitting the award with Vertiv or Delta Electronics on the power side.

Operators should track Flex's fiscal Q1 2025 earnings in late July for commentary on EPC backlog conversion and hyperscale customer adoption rates for integrated power-plus-compute racks. The company has historically guided 6-9 months from design win to volume production on custom data center products. Watch for announcements around EPC's grid-scale inverter pipeline, which includes 2.1 GW of utility battery storage projects scheduled for deployment through 2026, mostly in ERCOT and CAISO markets where frequency regulation revenue remains structurally positive. The grid side de-risks the acquisition if AI capex decelerates, but the real value accrues if Flex can cross-sell EPC's power modules into its existing 47 hyperscale data center accounts before competitors replicate the offering.

EPC's engineering team of 340 employees, based in North Carolina and Germany, stays intact under Flex's Infrastructure Solutions segment. The company has been sampling 200 kW per-rack power modules since Q4 2024, designed for next-generation Blackwell and MI300-series deployments where compute density will exceed 200 kW per cabinet by late 2025. Flex now controls the margin dollars between the utility meter and the GPU backplane, exactly where the constraint sits.

The takeaway
Flex buys margin and speed by owning power conversion at the rack edge, where hyperscale AI deployments now spend 18-22% of facility capex.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.

Built by the craft floor — apparel, media, packaging, and secure print.
This trade runs on hands, not desks. Imprint manufacturing & Komori Press · Canon high-speed secure-media operations is a craft floor — genuine Six Sigma discipline applied to ink, thread, foil, and registration, where a hundredth of an inch is the difference between a brand that reads serious and one that reads cheap. POPS4 is built by exactly those operators: independent, boots-on-the-ground engineers who carry their own book, read a client in microseconds, and put their name on every run. Beyond our own Virginia Beach floor, we work with a vetted network of craft manufacturers across the US — each meeting the highest excellence in QC standards in the industry, each a specialist in its own discipline — so apparel, hard-goods imprinting, media manufacturing, packaging, and secure printing all go to the bench built for them, coordinated from one accountable hub. Short-run from twenty-five units, volume to five hundred thousand. Two hundred authorized national brands, seventy thousand SKUs with virtual proofing on every one. Art archived for instant reorders.
