Spreads compressed because buyers need yield and issuance found clearing prices quickly. High-yield funds absorbed $34 billion in net inflows during Q2, the strongest quarter since 2021. Insurance allocators, facing reinvestment pressure on maturing portfolios, bought $61 billion in corporate credit across ratings buckets. Private credit funds, priced out of traditional middle-market lending by competition, allocated $22 billion to liquid high-yield as a placeholder. The concentration creates asymmetric fragility. If three of the top ten data-center issuers experience refinancing stress simultaneously, index-tracking vehicles holding $340 billion in assets would face correlated markdowns without natural buyers stepping in at distressed levels. The AI capex thesis relies on utilization rates that have not yet materialized at scale—current GPU occupancy across wholesale colocation facilities averages 62%, well below the 85% threshold most underwriting models assume for cash-flow sustainability. Power delivery remains the binding constraint. Grid connection queues for new data-center projects now stretch 38 months in key markets, longer than the average bond maturity issued to fund them.
Allocators should monitor three variables through Q4 2026. First, utilization disclosure from the six largest wholesale data-center operators, expected in August earnings calls—any figure below 60% will reprice secondary spreads by 40-60 basis points within the session. Second, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission commentary on expedited interconnection rules, likely in September testimony, which could accelerate or delay $89 billion in shovel-ready projects. Third, refinancing calendars for March 2027 maturities, where $31 billion in data-center debt comes due and must roll in a market that may no longer offer seven-year paper at current coupons.
The capital deployed in H1 will either validate the infrastructure build or surface as the largest sectoral misallocation since shale 2.0. The answer arrives in utilization data, not in spread levels.
