Verizon signed a $1 billion dark fiber agreement with Google to connect AI data centers, the company disclosed this week. CEO Dan Schulman told investors the deal represents the first of several expected AI infrastructure partnerships, with additional contracts worth multiple billions of dollars anticipated before December.
The arrangement centers on unlit fiber—strands leased without active equipment—allowing Google to deploy its own transmission gear across Verizon's physical network. Dark fiber contracts have historically served enterprise customers seeking low-latency private networks, but hyperscaler adoption at this scale marks a structural shift in data center interconnection economics. Verizon operates roughly 150,000 route miles of fiber in the United States, concentrated in metro areas where AI training clusters are emerging. The company has not disclosed which specific routes or metropolitan statistical areas the Google contract covers.
The deal matters because it redistributes capital allocation within the AI infrastructure stack. Hyperscalers have spent the past decade building their own long-haul fiber networks—Google alone operates subsea cables connecting four continents—but training workloads now require campus-scale connectivity that exceeds the build-out speed of internal teams. Leasing existing conduit from Verizon or AT&T compresses deployment timelines from eighteen months to eight weeks. For Verizon, the contract converts stranded fiber assets into recurring revenue without requiring incremental capital expenditure. The company's fiber utilization rate has historically hovered near 62%, meaning tens of thousands of route miles sit dark. Schulman's guidance on additional multi-billion-dollar deals by year-end suggests Meta, Microsoft, or Amazon are negotiating similar arrangements. All three have flagged capital expenditure increases for 2025, with Microsoft alone planning $80 billion in data center and AI infrastructure spend. If Verizon captures even 5% of that spend through connectivity contracts, the telecom segment becomes a meaningful beneficiary of AI capex without needing to manufacture chips or operate compute.
