Verizon signed a $1 billion dark fiber contract with Google to supply network infrastructure for AI data centers, Chief Executive Dan Schulman disclosed this week. The carrier expects to announce additional AI infrastructure agreements before December 31st worth "multiple billions of dollars," he said during an earnings call, naming no counterparties.
Dark fiber—unlit optical cable leased to third parties—has become the preferred infrastructure play for hyperscalers building out training clusters that require low-latency, point-to-point bandwidth beyond what traditional carrier networks can provision. Google's contract commits capital to physical conduit rather than Layer 3 connectivity, giving the company direct control over wavelength allocation and network topology as it scales Gemini and TPU infrastructure across multiple geographies. Verizon holds 275,000 route miles of fiber in the United States, much of it legacy wireline plant now being monetized as wholesale capacity.
The deal matters because it confirms that AI workload architects are bypassing commercial IP transit in favor of owned infrastructure—a structural shift that reallocates capital from monthly OpEx to CapEx commitments measured in nine figures. Verizon's pipeline commentary suggests at least two more hyperscalers are in advanced discussions, likely Microsoft and Amazon, both of which have publicly committed to expanding training capacity in 2025. If Schulman's "multiple billions" phrase translates to $3B to $5B in signed contracts by year-end, Verizon will have booked roughly $4B to $6B in AI-linked infrastructure revenue within a single fiscal year—enough to move the stock multiple if guided as recurring backlog rather than one-time construction.
The timing also matters. Google's contract was signed as the company ramps third-generation TPU deployments and expands Gemini Ultra inference capacity, both of which require dedicated, high-throughput links between compute nodes distributed across availability zones. Dark fiber allows Google to run its own DWDM equipment and scale bandwidth elastically without renegotiating SLAs or waiting for carrier provisioning cycles. For Verizon, the contract represents a hedge against declining consumer wireless ARPU and enterprise voice revenue—two legacy businesses under sustained pressure. Management has not disclosed the contract duration, but industry-standard dark fiber leases run 10 to 20 years with inflation-indexed pricing, making this a long-dated revenue stream with minimal incremental CapEx after initial build-out.
Operators and allocators should watch for two follow-on developments. First, whether Verizon discloses contract lengths and pricing structure in the 10-K filing due in late February, which would allow modeling of recurring revenue contribution and margin profile. Second, whether competitors—AT&T, Lumen, Zayo—announce similar hyperscaler contracts in the next 90 days, signaling broader market validation or simply reallocation of demand that would have gone to neutral colocation providers like Equinix or Digital Realty. If the latter, then Verizon's win is zero-sum within telecom infrastructure rather than evidence of incremental AI spend.
