Connecticut Sun Relocates to Houston After 23 Seasons, WNBA Approves Unanimous Sale

League's fourth-oldest franchise exits the Northeast as Houston secures second WNBA team in expansion wave.

The WNBA Board of Governors voted unanimously to approve the Connecticut Sun's relocation to Houston, effective after the 2026 season. The franchise, which has played in Uncasville since 2003, will complete its 23rd Connecticut season before the move. The sale and relocation end the Sun's tenure as one of four remaining original-market franchises from the league's pre-expansion era.

The Sun averaged 6,873 paid attendance in 2025, seventh in the 12-team league but down 11% from their 2023 peak. Mohegan Sun Arena, the tribe-owned facility that houses the team, seats 9,323 for basketball. The building opened in 2001 primarily as a casino entertainment venue. The Sun's local television deal with SNY expires after 2026. Houston's market size—7.5 million metro population versus Connecticut's 3.6 million—and corporate density made relocation economics straightforward. The Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority, which purchased the franchise in 2003 for approximately $10 million, is selling. The buyer and purchase price have not been disclosed, though comparable recent WNBA transactions valued teams at $50-85 million.

Houston previously hosted the Comets from 1997 to 2008, winning four consecutive championships under Cynthia Cooper and Sheryl Swoopes. That franchise folded during the 2008 financial crisis when owner Hilton Koch's trucking business collapsed. The city has lobbied for WNBA return since 2015. Toyota Center, home to the NBA Rockets, seats 18,055 and hosted the 2024 WNBA All-Star Game, which drew 17,680 paid. The Rockets' ownership group, led by Tilman Fertitta, declined comment on arena-sharing arrangements or potential ownership involvement. Houston's corporate sponsor base includes 18 Fortune 500 headquarters, compared to Connecticut's 2. Connecticut loses its only major-league women's professional team. The Sun made the WNBA Finals in 2019, 2022, and 2025, losing all three. The franchise has never won a championship despite 14 playoff appearances in 23 seasons.

The relocation creates immediate personnel questions. Head coach Stephanie White is under contract through 2027 at a reported $750,000 annually, among the league's top three coaching salaries. All-Star forward Alyssa Thomas, 34, has one year remaining on her deal. The Sun hold three first-round picks in the 2027 draft following trades executed in 2025. Typical relocation protocol allows existing contracts to remain in force, but players may request releases if the move constitutes a substantial change in working conditions. The WNBA allows such releases on a case-by-case basis. White has not commented. Thomas posted a Connecticut flag emoji on Instagram 47 minutes after the announcement.

The move accelerates the WNBA's shift toward larger markets and downtown arenas. Of the league's 15 announced franchises for 2027—including confirmed expansions in Portland, Toronto, and Philadelphia—11 will play in NBA-shared buildings. Connecticut's Mohegan Sun Arena sits 55 miles from downtown Hartford, accessible primarily by car. Houston's Toyota Center is adjacent to a light-rail station. League revenues grew 32% in 2025 to approximately $340 million, driven by a new media deal with ESPN, Amazon, and NBC worth $2.2 billion over 11 years starting in 2026. Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has stated the league plans to expand to 16 teams by 2028.

Houston's new franchise will begin play in September 2027, following the Sun's final Connecticut season. The team name, colors, and branding will be unveiled before the 2026 WNBA Draft Lottery in November 2026. Local reports suggest four ownership groups submitted bids, including one led by former Comets player Tina Thompson, now a private-equity partner in Austin. The league typically requires $25-30 million in capitalization for new or relocated franchises to cover startup costs and first-year losses. Ticket deposits open in June 2026.

Connecticut's corporate season-ticket holders include 23 companies, most tied to Hartford's insurance and aerospace industries. Those contracts run through 2026. Mohegan Sun Casino, the Sun's primary jersey sponsor since 2018 at a reported $1.8 million annually, has not announced whether it will pursue Houston sponsorship. The casino's Connecticut gaming revenue declined 6% year-over-year in Q1 2026 as regional competition increased. Houston's available jersey inventory—front, back, and shoulder patches—will command higher rates. Comparable NBA markets price WNBA jersey fronts at $3-5 million annually.

The Sun's departure leaves the Northeast with two WNBA teams: New York and the expansion Philadelphia franchise launching in 2027. Boston has submitted a preliminary expansion application for a 2029 team but faces arena availability issues. Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont released a statement expressing disappointment and noting the state's $5 million investment in Mohegan Sun Arena upgrades in 2019. Those funds came from a tourism development grant. The Mohegan Tribe is not required to repay state incentives under the original agreement terms.

Houston season-ticket interest will be monitored closely. The city's previous WNBA team averaged 7,340 paid in its final season, 2008, but that preceded the league's current media visibility and salary growth. The 2027 Sun roster will be determined after the 2026 season concludes. New ownership typically retains basketball operations staff but installs new front-office leadership. The Sun's current president, Jen Rizzotti, has not commented on her future. She previously coached at George Washington and Hartford before joining the Sun in 2021.

The timeline leaves 16 months for Houston branding, sponsorship sales, and season-ticket drives before opening night. The franchise will inherit Connecticut's playoff revenue share for 2026, estimated at $800,000-1.2 million depending on postseason performance. Houston's first game is tentatively scheduled for September 12, 2027, against Las Vegas.

The takeaway
Connecticut's exit reshapes WNBA geography and tests whether Houston's corporate base can finally support a women's franchise long-term.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
