Golden State Valkyries Launch as WNBA's Most Valuable Franchise at $170M

New expansion team surpasses New York Liberty before playing its first game, raising questions about the league's structural valuation floor.

The Golden State Valkyries are worth $170 million at launch, making them the most valuable franchise in the WNBA before they play their first regular-season game, according to Sportico's annual valuation report. The figure places them $15 million ahead of the New York Liberty, the previous leader, and more than double the league median of $85 million.

The valuation reflects the Bay Area market's corporate sponsor density and the Warriors' infrastructure play. The Valkyries share Chase Center with the NBA's Warriors, eliminating the venue-cost problem that caps revenue for teams playing in college arenas or secondary municipal buildings. They inherit the Warriors' season-ticket base for cross-sell, the same front-office sales staff, and Joe Lacob's Rolodex. The franchise paid a $50 million expansion fee in 2023, a price that now looks defensible given the published number.

What matters is whether this valuation represents Bay Area exceptionalism or the new floor for any competently operated WNBA franchise in a top-15 market. The league added the Valkyries and a Toronto expansion team as part of a deliberate move to capture corporate budgets during a year when women's sports sponsorship spending is projected to grow 22 percent, per Nielsen figures released in March. If Golden State's number holds through its first full season, the $50 million expansion fee will be considered underpriced by the next franchise applicant. Portland's ownership group has already signaled interest in a 2027 entry, and private conversations among family offices suggest bids for that slot may start at $75 million.

The Valkyries' valuation also resets expectations for existing franchises in large markets that have underinvested in venue deals and local media. The Las Vegas Aces, who play in a 12,000-seat arena and won back-to-back championships, are valued at $140 million, $30 million below Golden State. The Los Angeles Sparks, who play in a 10,000-seat arena with minimal suite inventory, are valued at $115 million, despite sitting in the second-largest U.S. market. Those gaps suggest that teams with aging venue deals or limited premium inventory will face pressure to renegotiate or relocate within their metro before the next media-rights cycle begins in 2026.

The timing is useful. The WNBA is negotiating a new national media-rights deal that league sources expect to exceed $200 million annually, up from $60 million under the current contract. If that number lands, the Valkyries' valuation implies a 12x revenue multiple, which would place the league in line with MLS expansion franchises and ahead of second-tier European soccer clubs. Sponsors are watching. PepsiCo signed a five-year jersey patch deal with the Valkyries in February worth a reported $8 million annually, the richest patch deal in WNBA history and triple what most teams currently command.

The Valkyries open their first season in May 2025. Their first home game is already sold out, and the team has a season-ticket waitlist that exceeds 8,000 names, according to front-office comments made in March. The franchise hired Natalie Nakase as head coach, a former Clippers assistant with fifteen years of NBA experience, and spent aggressively in the expansion draft to acquire Kayla Thornton and a pick package from the Dallas Wings. Whether the roster delivers wins is a separate question from whether the franchise validates its valuation. The revenue is already running.

The next signal comes when the Valkyries release Q3 sponsorship revenue figures, expected in October. If those numbers show $25 million or more in local deals, the $170 million valuation becomes the league's new median, not its ceiling.

The takeaway
Golden State's $170M launch valuation forces WNBA owners to reprice expansion slots and accelerate venue upgrades before 2026 media talks.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
