Josh Kushner and Bob Iger Buy Lakers for $12.5B, Resetting NBA Franchise Valuations

Josh Kushner and Bob Iger are buying the Los Angeles Lakers for $12.5 billion, pending NBA board approval expected by mid-September. The price is 62% above the Phoenix Suns' $7.7 billion sale in December 2023 and represents a 37% premium over what Mark Walter's group paid the Buss family in January 2025. Walter held the asset for 21 months.

Kushner, founder of Thrive Capital with a portfolio anchored by early OpenAI and Stripe stakes, is contributing roughly $7 billion in cash and rolled equity structures. Iger, who stepped down from Disney in December 2025, is writing a $3.2 billion check largely derived from his final Disney stock liquidation and private credit facilities arranged through Apollo. The remaining $2.3 billion comes from a consortium including Kleiner Perkins partner Mary Meeker and an unnamed sovereign wealth fund believed to be ADQ. The structure keeps Kushner and Iger as co-controlling owners with board seats; the consortium holds economic interest without governance rights.

The sale resets institutional expectations for NBA hold periods and exit multiples. Walter's group, which included Eldridge Industries and Guggenheim Partners, paid the Buss family $9.1 billion in a transaction that closed in late January 2025. That deal ended 43 years of family control and was structured as a clean sale with no earn-outs. Walter is exiting with a $3.4 billion gross gain in under two years, implying an annualized return near 19% before fees and debt service. League sources say Walter's group explored a minority sale to Saudi Arabia's PIF in June but pivoted to a full exit after Kushner's term sheet arrived with a 72-hour expiration and no financing contingency.

The implications extend beyond Los Angeles. The Knicks, valued at $6.6 billion by Forbes in February, are now likely worth north of $10 billion in any future Madison Square Garden spinoff scenario. The Warriors, last appraised at $8.2 billion, could command $11 billion if Joe Lacob ever entertained offers, which he has not. More immediately, the Dallas Mavericks' minority stake sale—Mark Cuban retains control but sold 27% to Miriam Adelson's family for $3.5 billion in November 2023—looks underpriced. Cuban's remaining 73% is now worth roughly $9.4 billion at Lakers-equivalent multiples, up from the $6.8 billion implied valuation at the time of the Adelson deal.

Kushner's playbook borrows from his venture strategy: acquire dominant franchises in winner-take-most markets, then layer technology and media optionality. He has spent the past six months meeting with YouTube's Neal Mohan and Apple's Eddy Cue, and league insiders expect the Lakers to pilot an in-arena AI betting integration by the 2026-27 season. Iger's involvement signals legacy ambition and Disney adjacency without the regulatory entanglements of active employment. His last public equity move was selling $120 million in Disney stock in October 2025 at $127 per share, three weeks before the company's streaming unit reported its first annual profit. He still owns 1.1 million shares worth roughly $142 million at current prices.

NBA board approval requires 75% of the league's 30 owners to vote yes. The process typically takes 60 to 90 days. Commissioner Adam Silver has already endorsed the deal in private conversations, according to two owners who requested anonymity. The vote is scheduled for the league's September board meeting in New York. If approved, Kushner and Iger will inherit a team with $287 million in luxury tax penalties projected for the 2026-27 season, the highest in the league, and a head coach, JJ Redick, entering year two of a four-year deal paying him $8 million annually. LeBron James is in the final year of his contract and will be 42 in December; his son Bronny is on a two-way deal. The Lakers also owe the New Orleans Pelicans a top-five protected first-round pick from the 2024 Anthony Davis trade, which conveys in 2027 if Los Angeles finishes outside the top five this season.

Walter is reallocating proceeds into two areas: a $1.8 billion commitment to Blackstone's latest sports infrastructure fund and a partnership with Oak View Group on a mixed-use development adjacent to SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. The development, announced quietly in a July filing, includes a 12,000-seat concert venue and 340,000 square feet of retail. Construction starts in Q1 2027.

The Lakers sale also creates a near-term compression event for other legacy family owners weighing exits. The Bucks, controlled by the Lasry and Edens families, are exploring a minority sale at a $5 billion valuation, according to a term sheet circulated to family offices in July. The Cavaliers, owned by Dan Gilbert, are not for sale, but Gilbert has fielded three unsolicited offers since the Lakers news broke, per a person familiar with the approaches. The Timberwolves, embroiled in a control dispute between Glen Taylor and prospective buyers Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez, now have a new comp: Lore and Rodriguez's $1.5 billion deal, structured in tranches, looks antiquated at a $4 billion implied enterprise value when the Lakers just traded at 2.8x revenue.

Kushner's first move will be hiring a new president of basketball operations. The Lakers' current front office, led by Rob Pelinka, reports directly to ownership. Pelinka's contract runs through 2027, but league sources say Kushner has already reached out to Masai Ujiri, whose Toronto Raptors contract expires in 2026, and Sam Presti, who has run Oklahoma City since 2007 and is not leaving. Kushner is also in talks with Excel Sports Management about a jersey patch deal worth north of $50 million annually, which would replace Bibigo and rank as the NBA's second-highest after the Warriors' $60 million Rakuten extension.

The NBA's media rights deals, finalized in July 2025 with Disney, NBC, and Amazon for a combined $76 billion over 11 years, take effect this season. The Lakers receive roughly $280 million annually in national revenue sharing, up from $180 million under the prior deal. Local media remains unsettled: the team's regional sports network, Spectrum SportsNet, is controlled by Charter Communications and is in year 12 of a 20-year, $4 billion deal signed in 2013. Charter has explored unwinding the contract early, and Kushner's team has held preliminary talks about moving games to a direct-to-consumer streaming bundle by 2028.

Iger's involvement also raises questions about future Disney-Lakers co-marketing. The NBA's rules prohibit team owners from holding significant stakes in league media partners, but Iger's 1.1 million shares represent less than 0.1% of Disney's market cap and fall below the threshold requiring divestment. He is, however, prohibited from joining Disney's board or accepting consulting fees during his Lakers tenure. The league office reviewed the Disney stock position in July and cleared the transaction.

Watch for Kushner's president of basketball operations hire by November, the outcome of the September board vote, and whether the Lakers attempt to renegotiate their local TV deal before the 2027-28 season. Iger's first courtside appearance is scheduled for opening night against the Clippers on October 22.

The takeaway
Walter exits Lakers after 21 months with **37%** gain; **$12.5B** sale resets NBA valuations and compresses institutional hold periods.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
