Southern Miss Sells Stadium Naming Rights to Renasant Bank After 50 Years as M.M. Roberts

Regional bank pays undisclosed amount for Conference USA venue as Golden Eagles chase facility revenue against Power Four gap.

Southern Miss is renaming M.M. Roberts Stadium to Renasant Stadium after a half-century under the original donor's name, marking the university's first corporate stadium naming deal. Financial terms were not disclosed. The venue seats 36,000 and hosts Conference USA football.

Renasant Bank, a $17.4 billion-asset regional with 200 branches across Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia, gets naming rights to the Hattiesburg campus facility. The deal replaces the M.M. Roberts name installed in 1973 when the stadium opened. Roberts, a former Mississippi Speaker of the House, provided the original gift. His family was consulted before the change, according to university statements.

The move reflects Group of Five pressure to monetize assets Power conferences have already sold twice over. Southern Miss reported $36.8 million in total athletic revenue for fiscal 2023, roughly one-tenth of an SEC median program. Conference USA's new media deal pays members under $1 million annually, down from the $3.2 million they received under the previous contract before realignment stripped the league of its largest brands. Naming rights historically generate $750,000 to $2 million per year for mid-major football venues, depending on market size and sponsor category exclusivity.

Renasant's retail footprint concentrates in Southern Miss's natural recruiting and alumni corridors. The bank operates 41 branches in Mississippi alone, including three in Hattiesburg. Its last major sports deal was a $5 million pledge to Ole Miss in 2016 for baseball facility improvements. Renasant Arena in downtown Memphis, a minor-league hockey and concert venue, has carried the bank's name since 2017 under a $4.8 million, 10-year agreement with the city.

For Southern Miss, the deal provides unrestricted cash at a time when the athletic department is absorbing the financial shock of Conference USA's diminished media value. The university cut seven sports programs in 2020 during pandemic-related budget adjustments, then reinstated five after donor backlash. Athletic director Jeremy McClain, hired in 2022, has prioritized facility upgrades and revenue diversification. The stadium's most recent renovation, a $5.6 million video board and sound system installed in 2019, was funded through a combination of university bonds and private gifts.

The Renasant name goes live for the 2025 season. Southern Miss opens at home September 6 against Alcorn State. The university is simultaneously negotiating new apparel and sideline branding agreements after its Under Armour contract expires in June. Renasant's contract length was not disclosed, but comparable Group of Five deals typically run 8 to 12 years with renewal options.

The bank's sponsorship strategy has historically favored long-term, lower-cost deals in secondary markets where its branch network overlaps with college sports fanbases. Renasant Stadium joins a portfolio that includes title sponsorship of a PGA Tour event qualifying series and various arena and ballpark deals across the Southeast. The Golden Eagles' next home revenue decision is expected to center on field naming rights, which remain available as a separate inventory piece. The football program has not posted a winning record since 2019.

The takeaway
Southern Miss monetizes stadium naming for first time in 50 years as Group of Five programs chase revenue against widening Power Four gap.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
