New York Liberty, Indiana Fever Crack WNBA's Top Tier at $925M, $850M Valuations

Chicago Sky drops in 2026 rankings as Liberty's Barclays lease and Fever's Clark premium reset the ownership math.

The New York Liberty and Indiana Fever now sit in the WNBA's valuation top three at $925 million and $850 million respectively, behind only the Golden State Valkyries' $1.05 billion debut mark, according to Sportico's 2026 franchise rankings. Chicago Sky, which held the second spot in 2024 valuations, falls to fourth at $825 million, a 9% gap behind Indiana that ownership advisors attribute to arena control and star player economics.

The Liberty's climb reflects $68 million in 2025 revenue—the league's second-highest—anchored by Barclays Center's 17,732-seat capacity and a local media deal with MSG Networks that pays $12 million annually through 2028. Owner Joe Tsai, who bought the team for $10 million in 2019, now holds an asset worth 92.5x that price in seven years. The Fever's jump is simpler: Caitlin Clark. Indiana pulled $52 million in revenue last season, with 91% of home games sold out and a 340% increase in road ticket pricing when the Fever visit. The franchise sold for $8.5 million in 2023; current valuation implies a 100x return in three years.

Chicago's slip matters because it breaks the assumption that legacy markets and consistent playoff runs hold value better than star-driven expansion. The Sky own four championships since 2005 and average 9,200 fans per game at Wintrust Arena, but the building seats only 10,387 and the team doesn't control concessions or suite revenue. Indiana, by contrast, renegotiated its Gainbridge Fieldhouse lease in 2024 to capture 65% of arena-generated income on game nights, up from 38%. That's worth roughly $8 million per season in additional EBITDA, which valuators capitalize at 12-14x. The Liberty's situation is similar but larger: Barclays generates $22 million in team-controlled arena income, and Tsai's vertical integration with BSE Global (which operates the venue) means no third-party lease friction.

The ownership implication is clear. Buyers now price WNBA teams on two variables: building economics and marquee talent under rookie-scale contracts. Clark earns $76,535 this season while driving an estimated $28 million in incremental franchise revenue through ticket, merchandise, and sponsor lifts. That 366x return on salary is the highest in North American sports. Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu, on a supermax at $241,984, still generates 4.2x her salary in marginal revenue via Nike's signature shoe deal and MSG viewership premiums. Chicago has neither the building leverage nor the individual star vehicle. Angel Reese is talented but plays in a market where the Bulls and Blackhawks dominate corporate budgets, and Wintrust's capacity ceiling limits upside.

Three transactions are now live. Portland's expansion franchise, awarded in December for $125 million, is already fielding inquiries from secondary buyers at $160-$175 million before playing a game. Toronto's bid, expected to close in June, is priced at $150 million but ownership groups are underwriting $200 million valuations by 2028 if the team lands a top-three draft pick. And a family office with $4.2 billion in AUM has opened quiet conversations with Chicago's ownership group, per two people familiar, though no formal process has started. The offer range being discussed is $750-$800 million, below Sportico's mark but above what the Sky would have drawn 18 months ago.

Watch for Indiana's arena lease extension talks, which begin in August. The current deal runs through 2028, but Pacers Sports & Entertainment wants to lock in a longer 20-year term with revised revenue splits before the Clark contract cycle resets in 2027. Liberty's MSG media rights come up for renewal in 2028; Tsai is expected to shop a direct-to-consumer streaming package that could triple the annual rights fee. And Chicago's ownership, led by Michael Alter, will face pressure to either renegotiate Wintrust terms or move the team to a larger building, possibly the United Center, by 2027.

The Fever are now worth 100x what they sold for three years ago, and the franchise still doesn't control its own arena naming rights.

The takeaway
Liberty and Fever valuations now hinge on building economics and star contracts; Chicago's drop signals legacy market assumptions no longer hold.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
