**16%** of product shoppers now begin discovery on ChatGPT or similar AI platforms, according to new research reported by Digiday. That share has tripled in twelve months. But only **9%** of those discoverers complete purchase inside the AI interface. The gap tells the story: AI gets the brand in front of the buyer, but reviews and third-party signals close the transaction.

The research, conducted across consumer electronics and home goods categories, tracked shopper behavior from query to checkout. Buyers queried ChatGPT for recommendations, clicked through to branded pages or marketplaces, then stopped. The final action before purchase was not another AI prompt. It was reading reviews on Amazon, checking Reddit threads, or scrolling TikTok for unboxing footage. The AI answered the what. The review answered the whether.

This is not an AI failure. It is a handoff. Generative search surfaces products faster than SEO ever did, particularly for long-tail or specification-heavy queries. A buyer asks for waterproof Bluetooth speakers under fifty dollars with USB-C charging, and ChatGPT returns five candidates in three seconds. Traditional search requires tab-hopping and filtering. AI collapses discovery. But discovery is not trust. The buyer still needs someone who already owns the thing to say it works.

The mechanism is familiar to anyone who has sold physical product in the last decade. Traffic without proof converts poorly. A product page with zero reviews converts at half the rate of one with fifty, even mediocre ones. The AI adds a new top-of-funnel, but the trust layer has not moved. If anything, AI-generated recommendations feel more algorithmic, less human, which increases the need for a second opinion. The buyer treats ChatGPT like a research assistant, not a shopping companion.

The steal for a small physical-product brand is to build for the handoff, not the interface. You will not control what ChatGPT recommends today, but you can control what the buyer finds when they leave the chat and start verifying. Seed your review profile on Amazon, encourage video testimonials on TikTok, and make sure your product page includes a testimonial block above the fold with real names and purchase dates. When a buyer copies your product name from ChatGPT and pastes it into Google or Amazon search, the first result should be proof, not marketing copy.

Concretely: after every shipment, send a plain-text email **seven days** post-delivery asking for a photo review on Amazon or a quick video on TikTok. Offer a **ten-dollar** credit toward the next order, not a discount on the current one. That keeps the incentive clean and the review credible. Budget **fifty dollars per month** to a service like Loox or Okendo to aggregate those reviews onto your DTC site with structured data markup so Google can surface star ratings in search snippets. The AI will send the click. The review will convert it.

This is not a long-term moat. Eventually, AI platforms will integrate review data natively or build their own trust signals. But today, the gap is open. The brand that understands AI as a discovery engine and reviews as a conversion engine will capture both sides of the handoff and convert at the **9%** baseline or better. The one that treats AI as a replacement for proof will watch traffic rise and revenue stay flat.

## The takeaway

AI discovers, reviews convert — build your proof layer so the handoff closes the sale.
