The sharpest openers do something counterintuitive: they segment instantly. If you came here to journal, this is not for you. If you are here to build, stay. The line repels the casual reader on purpose and pulls the right one in harder.

It works because trying to be for everyone makes you compelling to no one. A reader who is told who the piece is not for feels the click of recognition when it turns out to be for them. That recognition is what converts a scroller into a subscriber.

**The steal:** open by naming who your work is not for. Draw the line out loud. The wrong reader scrolls past, which is fine, they were never going to pay. The right reader leans in, because you just proved you understand exactly who they are.

The myth this ends: that a wider net catches more. A wider net catches people who never act. A sharp filter catches the few who do, and while competitors water themselves down to please everyone, you become unmistakable to the ones who matter.

## The takeaway

Open by naming who it is not for. The right buyer leans in harder.
