TikTok Shop has become the top product discovery channel for U.S. consumers, according to a survey reported by Forbes in August 2024, but a majority of those shoppers click away to Amazon or brand sites to complete the purchase. The platform generates attention and intent, then loses the transaction to whoever owns fulfillment.

The survey found that while TikTok Shop leads discovery, **more than 60 percent** of users who find a product on the platform finish the buy elsewhere, according to Forbes. The gap is structural: TikTok Shop surfaces new brands through algorithm-fed content, but Amazon owns the trust layer, the Prime account, and the return process. The customer moves from discovery to checkout in two tabs.

This works because TikTok Shop traffics in impulse and novelty, not replenishment. A beauty serum or a cleaning gadget goes viral in a 40-second video, the viewer adds it to cart, then pauses at shipping cost or delivery time and opens Amazon to compare. If the brand is present on Amazon with competitive pricing and Prime eligibility, the sale completes there. If not, the brand loses the customer it just paid to educate.

The mechanism is a **two-platform funnel**: TikTok Shop for top-of-funnel awareness, Amazon for conversion. Brands that resist this pattern and try to convert natively on TikTok Shop often pay higher customer acquisition costs and lower conversion rates than they would by treating TikTok as a demand generator and Amazon as the checkout counter. The platform that wins discovery does not always win revenue.

Small brands can run this play without a media budget. List the product on Amazon with Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) enabled, build a TikTok account, and post product-use content three times per week. No paid ads required. When a video catches organic reach, the comment section fills with purchase questions. Drop the Amazon link in replies or pin it in the profile. The customer path is discovery on TikTok, search on Amazon, checkout via Prime.

The cost structure favors this approach. TikTok Shop charges a **5 to 8 percent** commission plus fulfillment if you use their logistics, according to the platform's seller documentation. Amazon FBA runs **15 percent** referral plus storage and pick/pack, but delivers the product in two days with no customer friction. The blended cost per order is often lower when you skip TikTok's cart and route through Amazon, because conversion rate is higher and returns are easier.

Brands that understand the handoff also understand the creative brief. TikTok content should show the product in use, explain the problem it solves, and make the brand name memorable enough to search. Do not optimize for in-app checkout. Optimize for recall and re-search. The video's job is to place a product name in the viewer's short-term memory long enough for them to type it into Amazon. That changes what you shoot and how you script it.

The broader pattern is platform specialization. TikTok Shop built a discovery engine that surfaces unknown brands to millions of users at zero cost, but has not solved trust, logistics, or repeat purchase. Amazon solved all three but has no viral discovery mechanism. The winning move for a physical-product brand in 2024 is to let each platform do what it does best and stop trying to convert where the customer does not want to buy.

## The takeaway

TikTok Shop drives discovery, Amazon closes the sale—optimize content for product recall, not in-app checkout.
