You are not competing against other national brands for shelf space. You are competing against the retailer's own product. The retailer has already decided private-label wins on volume. You need to win on a different metric — premium positioning, cultural relevance, or exclusive supply. (This is the part that gets the opens.)\n[ your take… ]\n———\nHere is a real one you can run this week 👇\nNearly 25% of all US grocery units sold in H1 2026 are private-label products, per Food Navigator. Private-label brands continued to outperform national brands in unit sales, though national brands grew faster in dollar sales (indicating national brands are holding premium pricing).\nHere's the cool part — the lever almost everyone misses (and you don't have to): if you are a small DTC brand planning retail distribution, do not assume the retailer will allocate shelf space to compete against their own private-label. Instead, negotiate a promotional placement or co-marketing agreement that requires the retailer to feature you alongside their private-label (positioning your product as a premium alternative, not a replacement). Or accelerate direct-to-consumer sales and skip retail entirely until your brand is large enough to negotiate prime placement. The days of a small national brand winning a standard shelf facing against private-label are over.\nWhat that means for you: This is not news to grocery teams, but it is news to DTC founders planning their first retail push. You are not competing against other national brands for shelf space. You are competing against the retailer's own product. The retailer has already decided private-label wins on volume. You need to win on a different metric — premium positioning, cultural relevance, or exclusive supply. Or stay DTC and own 100% margin instead of fighting for 10% of a shelf.\nIf you make, sell, or gift anything with your name on it — this is yours to run. You can do this.\n(Real, not theory — Food Navigator: https://www.foodnavigator.com/Article/2026/07/09/private-label-widens-lead-over-national-brands-in-2026-grocery-unit-sales/.)\n———\nOr — want it built FOR you?
