BBVA books €6.1B H1 profit, commits €2B to buyback amid European bank capital wave

BBVA closed the first half of 2026 with net profit of €6.1 billion, an 11% increase year-on-year, and authorized an extraordinary share buyback of €2 billion effective immediately. The Madrid-based lender becomes the third top-tier European bank this quarter to announce accelerated capital return after meeting Basel III buffers with room to spare.

The bank's H1 performance splits cleanly: retail banking in Spain and Mexico contributed €4.2 billion, up 14%, while Turkish operations added €1.1 billion despite lira volatility. Net interest income rose 9% to €11.8 billion on sustained rate environments in core markets. Credit costs held at 42 basis points of loans, below the 48-52bp range BBVA guided in February. The CET1 ratio stood at 13.1% at June 30, 190 basis points above regulatory minimum, creating the arithmetic room for the buyback without touching organic capital generation.

The timing matters because BBVA is executing while peers hesitate. Santander announced a €3 billion program in April. BNP Paribas followed with €2.5 billion in May. Both cited the same logic: regulatory certainty around capital requirements through 2027, muted M&A pipelines in European banking, and shareholder pressure after three years of retained earnings. BBVA's buyback represents roughly 4.8% of its €41.7 billion market capitalization as of Friday's close, a material reduction in float that reallocates equity from balance sheet to shareholder hands. The bank has returned €7.3 billion in buybacks and dividends since January 2024.

The Mexico franchise remains the profit engine. BBVA Mexico generated €2.9 billion in H1 net profit, 48% of group total, on a loan book that grew 11% in local currency. Nearshoring momentum continues: commercial loan originations to manufacturers in Monterrey, Querétaro, and Guanajuato grew 23% sequentially in Q2. The peso averaged 18.4 to the dollar in the half, providing translation tailwinds. Spain contributed €1.3 billion, up 8%, with mortgage originations rising 6% as ECB rate cuts in March and June eased affordability constraints. Turkey posted €1.1 billion despite 64% annual inflation, reflecting BBVA's defensive positioning in corporate and trade finance rather than consumer exposure.

Allocators should track BBVA's CET1 ratio through Q3 reporting in October. The bank telegraphed it will maintain a 12.5-13.0% range post-buyback, implying continued capacity for opportunistic capital return if loan growth undershoots guidance. Watch for any commentary on Garanti Bank, BBVA's 49.85%-owned Turkish subsidiary, where minority exit rumors surfaced in May. Separately, BBVA's technology spend—€1.2 billion in H1—positions it as the second-largest fintech investor among European legacy banks after ING. That capital is going into cloud-native cores in Mexico and Spain, shortening product release cycles to 4-6 weeks from 6-9 months in 2023.

The €2 billion buyback completes before year-end. BBVA executes through a single broker mandate, expected to retire shares in tranches of €400-500 million monthly starting August. The bank did not announce a dividend increase beyond the €0.29 per share interim payment in October, suggesting it views buybacks as the cleanest capital return mechanism while Spanish retail investor appetite for dividends remains strong. European bank capital return this cycle is now €24 billion announced, €18 billion executed.

The takeaway
BBVA's €2B buyback extends the European bank capital wave, with €6.1B H1 profit driven by Mexico nearshoring and disciplined credit costs.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.

Built by the craft floor — apparel, media, packaging, and secure print.
This trade runs on hands, not desks. Imprint manufacturing & Komori Press · Canon high-speed secure-media operations is a craft floor — genuine Six Sigma discipline applied to ink, thread, foil, and registration, where a hundredth of an inch is the difference between a brand that reads serious and one that reads cheap. POPS4 is built by exactly those operators: independent, boots-on-the-ground engineers who carry their own book, read a client in microseconds, and put their name on every run. Beyond our own Virginia Beach floor, we work with a vetted network of craft manufacturers across the US — each meeting the highest excellence in QC standards in the industry, each a specialist in its own discipline — so apparel, hard-goods imprinting, media manufacturing, packaging, and secure printing all go to the bench built for them, coordinated from one accountable hub. Short-run from twenty-five units, volume to five hundred thousand. Two hundred authorized national brands, seventy thousand SKUs with virtual proofing on every one. Art archived for instant reorders.
