Christie's moved $1.1 billion in a single evening last week. Sotheby's followed with $1.4 billion across its marquee May sales. Together, the two houses closed $2.5 billion in transactions in one season, the first clean rebound since 2022's liquidity freeze.

The Jackson Pollock that sold for $181 million was guaranteed. So were seventeen other lots above $50 million. What changed was not demand—it was choreography. Both houses spent six months negotiating floor prices with sellers, then pre-sold third-party guarantees to clients who wanted exposure without bidding. The result: no passed lots above $40 million, and phone bidders who knew exactly when to stop. Christie's reported that 62% of lots sold above high estimate, up from 31% the prior May.

This matters because the auction houses rewrote the risk model. For four years, sellers held inventory off-market rather than accept discounts. Buyers hesitated because comparable-sale data staled. Christie's and Sotheby's solved both problems by underwriting the floor and selling the upside separately. Third-party guarantors—mostly family offices and a handful of funds—paid 3% to 5% premiums to own the right of first refusal if a lot failed to clear its reserve. None did. The guarantors collected fees; the houses collected commissions on gross hammer; sellers received certainty. It is a structural shift, not a sentiment recovery.

Allocators should note three follow-ons. First, both houses are now booking fall consignments at 15% to 20% higher reserve floors than they offered in spring 2025. Second, the guarantor pool is narrowing—only nine institutions provided guarantees above $30 million this season, down from fourteen in 2021. Third, Sotheby's is piloting a derivatives product that lets collectors hedge their collections against category-level indices, expected to launch in pilot by September. That turns static assets into tradable exposure.

The Pollock sale was not a Pollock sale. It was a demonstration that large art can move again if the house assumes the timing risk and splits the upside into tranches. Guarantors are now calling both auction houses for early looks at fall inventory. The liquidity returned because someone finally priced the illiquidity correctly.
