Citi Wealth holds private credit through redemption gates, signaling conviction that illiquidity premium beats early exit into weak secondary bids.

Citi Wealth Management is maintaining its private credit allocation even as client redemption requests breach the quarterly withdrawal limits embedded in fund documents. Division head Andy Sieg told investors the asset class remains a "core holding" despite elevated gate activity across the $1.7 trillion private credit market. The firm oversees approximately $87 billion in alternative credit strategies for ultra-high-net-worth clients and family offices.
The withdrawal pressure is not panic. It is mechanical rebalancing after three years of compressed spreads and a 340 basis point rally in leveraged loan prices since October 2023. Private credit funds typically allow quarterly redemptions capped at 5% to 10% of assets, with 90-day notice periods. When requests exceed the gate, they queue. Sieg's public defense of the allocation tells allocators two things: Citi is not honoring full redemption requests on schedule, and the firm believes the next 18 months favor patient capital over liquidity.
The timing matters. Private credit has absorbed $620 billion in institutional inflows since 2021, much of it from family offices and endowments seeking yield premiums over syndicated loans. That premium has narrowed to 180 basis points as of March 2025, down from 340 basis points in early 2023, according to Cliffwater Direct Lending Index data. Meanwhile, default rates in middle-market private credit rose to 3.8% in Q4 2024, the highest since 2020. Sieg is holding through early-cycle stress, betting that spread widening and refinancing pressure will reward locked-in lenders.
The strategic tell is Sieg's framing. He did not describe the redemptions as isolated client decisions. He called them "market volatility," which means multiple accounts are pulling simultaneously. That coordination suggests either a shared risk committee view or a common liquidity event—likely tax distribution needs or margin calls in public portfolios. Either way, Citi Wealth is choosing to absorb the reputational cost of delayed redemptions rather than liquidate positions into a seller's market. The implicit message: the bid is worse than the wait.
Allocators should watch private credit Net Asset Value revisions in April and July reporting windows, particularly among funds with more than 15% exposure to commercial real estate or software-sector borrowers. If Sieg's bet is correct, spread widening will create entry points for secondaries and co-investment vehicles by Q3 2025. If redemption queues persist into August, expect fund sponsors to offer in-kind distributions or discounted secondary sales to clear the backlog.
Citi Wealth is not the largest private credit allocator among wirehouses, but it is the first to publicly acknowledge gate friction while defending the position. Morgan Stanley Wealth and UBS Global Wealth have not commented on redemption activity. Silence, in this context, is also a signal.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.

This trade runs on hands, not desks. Imprint manufacturing & Komori heritage press through approved vendors · Canon high-speed secure-media operations is a craft floor — genuine Six Sigma discipline applied to ink, thread, foil, and registration, where a hundredth of an inch is the difference between a brand that reads serious and one that reads cheap. POPS4 is built by exactly those operators: independent, boots-on-the-ground engineers who carry their own book, read a client in microseconds, and put their name on every run. Beyond our own Virginia Beach floor, we work with a vetted network of craft manufacturers across the US — each meeting the highest excellence in QC standards in the industry, each a specialist in its own discipline — so apparel, hard-goods imprinting, media manufacturing, packaging, and secure printing all go to the bench built for them, coordinated from one accountable hub.
