Crescent Capital BDC announced a 19% dividend reduction on falling net investment income, pushing the stock to a 39% discount to net asset value. The stock closed the session at $10.87, against a reported NAV of $17.83 per share. Trading volume spiked 240% above the thirty-day average as the disclosure circulated.
The BDC attributed the cut to declining portfolio yields and elevated non-accruals in its middle-market credit book. Net investment income per share fell 14% quarter-over-quarter, driven by credit deterioration in three unnamed portfolio companies that moved to non-accrual status during the period. The quarterly distribution now stands at $0.38 per share, down from $0.47. Management cited duration mismatch in floating-rate assets as revolving credit facilities repriced downward faster than the liability stack adjusted.
The 39% NAV discount places Crescent Capital BDC in the bottom decile of publicly traded BDCs by price-to-book. Comparable vehicles—Ares Capital, Golub Capital BDC, and FS KKR Capital—trade between 92% and 104% of NAV. The discount implies either structural pessimism on asset quality or a liquidity event priced into the spread. Crescent's portfolio is 73% first-lien senior secured, with a weighted average yield of 10.2%, down from 11.8% a year ago. Non-accruals now represent 4.7% of the portfolio at fair value, above the 2.1% BDC sector median.
The sharp discount creates asymmetry for allocators willing to hold through credit normalization. At $10.87, the stock yields 14.0% on the reduced distribution, materially above the 9.3% sector average. If non-accruals stabilize and the discount compresses to 20%—still punitive—the equity returns 23% before distributions. The risk is further NII erosion or a capital raise that locks in the discount. Crescent's leverage ratio sits at 1.18x, below the 1.50x regulatory threshold but high enough to limit room for incremental writedowns without breaching covenants.
Watch for Crescent's Q1 2025 earnings in early May, which will clarify whether non-accruals peaked or spread. Management has committed to a conference call update by mid-April on portfolio remediation efforts. If the three unnamed credits exit non-accrual or restructure with recovery above 60¢ on the dollar, the market may reassess the discount. Conversely, if the Board authorizes a secondary offering below NAV—permitted under the 2024 shelf registration—the discount becomes structural.
The 39% gap is the opinion. Either the assets are worth 39% less than stated, or the market is pricing a forced sale that hasn't happened yet.
