RBC Cuts European Luxury Earnings View as $340B Sector Faces Demand Reset

Analyst downgrades signal the market has not priced the magnitude of the buying-pattern shift underway in China and North America.

RBC Capital Markets downgraded earnings estimates across European luxury-goods makers on Tuesday, telling clients that consensus numbers remain 15-22% too high for fiscal 2027. The revision covers the sector's $340 billion combined market capitalization and marks the third major sellside reset in eight weeks.

The analysts cited softening demand conditions in two regions that together account for 61% of luxury revenues: Greater China and North America. Chinese buyers—historically responsible for 32% of global luxury purchases—have reduced frequency and ticket size since Q2 2026. North American high-net-worth cohorts are extending replacement cycles on handbags and watches, a behavioral shift RBC traces to wealth-effect compression in private markets and real estate. The firm now models European luxury EBITDA growth at 3-5% for 2027, down from the Street's 9-11%.

The revision matters because luxury-goods makers trade at 22-28x forward earnings, multiples that assume sustained pricing power and volume resilience. RBC's downgrade implies those assumptions no longer hold. If Chinese reopening demand was the 2023 tailwind, the 2026-2027 headwind is the absence of any comparable catalyst. Wealthy buyers are not vanishing; they are simply waiting. That waiting period creates a valuation compression risk the market has not yet reflected in share prices, which remain within 7% of twelve-month highs for the sector's top five names.

Allocators should note the timing. RBC published on the first day of earnings-guidance season for European luxury, which runs through October 18. If management teams validate RBC's caution—or cut their own numbers—the sector could reprice 12-18% lower in four weeks. The alternative is that companies hold guidance and the Street dismisses RBC as early. Either outcome will be clear before November 1. Watch for any mention of "moderating demand" or "normalized growth" in the September 28-October 5 window, when LVMH, Kering, and Richemont report.

RBC's move is a preview of what happens when a sector priced for resilience meets a demand environment that requires proof. The luxury-goods makers have six weeks to provide it.

The takeaway
RBC's 15-22% earnings cut for European luxury signals the Street has not priced the depth of the China and US demand slowdown.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.

Built by the craft floor — apparel, media, packaging, and secure print.
This trade runs on hands, not desks. Imprint manufacturing & Komori heritage press through approved vendors · Canon high-speed secure-media operations is a craft floor — genuine Six Sigma discipline applied to ink, thread, foil, and registration, where a hundredth of an inch is the difference between a brand that reads serious and one that reads cheap. POPS4 is built by exactly those operators: independent, boots-on-the-ground engineers who carry their own book, read a client in microseconds, and put their name on every run. Beyond our own Virginia Beach floor, we work with a vetted network of craft manufacturers across the US — each meeting the highest excellence in QC standards in the industry, each a specialist in its own discipline — so apparel, hard-goods imprinting, media manufacturing, packaging, and secure printing all go to the bench built for them, coordinated from one accountable hub. Short-run from twenty-five units, volume to five hundred thousand. Two hundred authorized national brands, seventy thousand SKUs with virtual proofing on every one. Art archived for instant reorders. Net-thirty corporate terms, NDA-standard white-label — your name on the work, or none at all.
