Infineon Opens $5.7B Dresden Fab Months Early, Reshaping European Power Semiconductor Supply

World's largest power chip facility begins production ahead of schedule as Europe bets on automotive electrification autonomy.

Infineon Technologies opened its Smart Power Fab in Dresden this week, bringing $5.7 billion in committed capital online months ahead of the original timeline. The facility is now the world's largest dedicated power semiconductor manufacturing site, with initial capacity targeting 300mm wafers for automotive and industrial applications. Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs contributed €1 billion in direct subsidies under the European Chips Act framework.

The facility went operational in February 2025, approximately four months ahead of Infineon's public guidance from Q3 2024. Construction began in May 2021. The fab occupies 280,000 square meters in Dresden's semiconductor corridor, adjacent to Infineon's existing 200mm production lines and within 15 kilometers of Bosch's power electronics R&D center. First-phase production focuses on silicon carbide and gallium nitride substrates for electric vehicle inverters and charging infrastructure, with volume ramp scheduled through H2 2025. Infineon has not disclosed initial monthly wafer output, but industry benchmarks for comparable 300mm power fabs suggest 15,000 to 20,000 wafer starts per month at full phase-one capacity.

This matters because Europe's automotive OEMs have been structurally short on power semiconductors since Q4 2021, when lead times for SiC MOSFETs stretched past 52 weeks. Volkswagen, BMW, and Stellantis each reported production delays in 2023 attributable to power chip shortages, with VW citing inverter component gaps in 180,000 units of ID.4 production alone. The Dresden fab gives European automakers a regional supplier at sub-12-week lead times by late 2025, breaking dependence on Taiwanese and Japanese foundries that still command 68% of global power semiconductor capacity. Infineon's customer roster includes all three German OEMs plus Renault and Volvo. The company has pre-sold 40% of 2026 Dresden output under multi-year supply agreements signed in 2023 and 2024, according to its February earnings call.

The early opening creates immediate tension in the power semiconductor spot market. Wolfspeed, ON Semiconductor, and STMicroelectronics have been running at 95%+ utilization since mid-2024, extracting premium pricing on automotive-grade SiC. Infineon's incremental capacity arrival in Q2 2025—rather than Q3 2025—compresses that window by 12 to 16 weeks, exactly as OEMs negotiate 2026 supply contracts. Spot prices for 1200V SiC MOSFETs have already declined 8% since January, per semiconductor distributor data. If Dresden ramps to 50% of phase-one capacity by August, European power chip ASPs could compress another 10 to 15% by year-end, pressuring ON Semi and STMicro margins in their automotive segments.

Watch for Infineon's Q2 2025 earnings in May, which should include the first Dresden revenue contribution and updated full-year automotive segment guidance. The company's prior guidance assumed zero Dresden revenue in H1 2025. European Commission subsidy disbursements are staged through 2027, with the next €250 million tranche conditional on achieving 25,000 wafer starts per month by Q1 2026. Separately, Bosch is expected to announce co-investment in adjacent packaging and test capacity in Dresden by mid-2025, likely timed to Infineon's phase-two expansion decision in Q3 2025. That decision hinges on whether European EV production exceeds 3.2 million units in 2025, a threshold the region is currently tracking 7% below.

The subsidy structure telegraphs Berlin's calculus: €1 billion in public capital to secure €5.7 billion in private investment and eliminate a $12 billion annual automotive production risk from supply chain fragility. Infineon's early delivery suggests the execution risk was always lower than the geopolitical urgency.

The takeaway
Infineon's $5.7B Dresden fab opens early, adding European power chip capacity just as automotive SiC supply tightness begins to crack.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
