The facility handles 300mm wafers with monthly capacity targeting automotive-grade chips for electric powertrains and industrial motor controls.
The Dresden site brings 3,000 employees online across production and engineering. Infineon structured the project with €1 billion in European Chips Act subsidies, locking in operational economics that German Energy Minister Robert Habeck called "anchor infrastructure" for continental battery and automotive supply chains. First silicon shipped to automotive OEMs in December, with volume production ramping through Q2.
Power semiconductors trade at different margin profiles than logic or memory. Infineon's gross margin on automotive power chips runs near 42%, sustained by long-cycle design-in agreements with Tier 1 suppliers. The Dresden capacity adds 20% to Infineon's total automotive silicon output, timing to a global EV market that consumed 14 million battery-electric and plug-in vehicles in 2024. Each EV uses $800-1,200 in power management silicon, double the content of internal combustion platforms. Larger wafer diameter yields 40% more chips per production cycle at lower unit cost.
