Kering jumps 16.9% as Gucci's turnaround lands. Hermès misses same week.

Luca de Meo's jewelry pivot and new leather goods beat quarterly expectations while French rival stumbles on comps.

Kering closed up 16.9% after Gucci reported quarterly sales above consensus, marking the first credible signal that CEO Luca de Meo's turnaround is taking hold. The Paris-listed luxury conglomerate added roughly €9.2 billion in market cap on Tuesday, outpacing the CAC 40's sideways drift and reversing six quarters of Gucci underperformance. Hermès, reporting the same week, disappointed on revenue growth and shed ground against its own elevated comps.

Gucci's performance turned on two product lines: the Borsetto and Paparazzo bags, both launched in Q1, and a men's leather goods refresh that landed in April. Sales growth in these categories offset continued weakness in logo-driven accessories, which have underperformed since late 2022. De Meo, who took the CEO role in January, has publicly committed to a jewelry-led strategy for the second half, betting that higher-margin hard luxury can stabilize margins while leather goods regain traction. Kering's jewelry and watches division, anchored by Boucheron and Pomellato, remains subscale relative to LVMH's Bulgari or Richemont's Cartier, but the pivot signals intent to compete in a category where operating margins run 600-800 basis points higher than soft goods.

Hermès, by contrast, reported sales that missed Street expectations by roughly 3%, dragged by tougher year-over-year comparisons in China and a deceleration in U.S. demand for Birkin and Kelly bags. The company's waiting-list model, which has insulated it from cyclical swings for a decade, is now working against it as aspirational buyers retreat and ultra-high-net-worth clients slow repeat purchases. Hermès trades at 48x forward earnings, a premium that assumes mid-single-digit growth without interruption. Tuesday's print called that assumption into question. The stock gave back 4.1% in two sessions.

The divergence matters because it reframes the luxury pecking order. For eighteen months, the narrative held that Hermès and Brunello Cucinelli occupied a quality tier immune to macro headwinds, while LVMH and Kering faced structural risk from Chinese retrenchment. Kering's rally and Hermès' stumble suggest that execution and product cycle now matter more than brand elevation alone. Allocators who overweighted Hermès on defensiveness are now holding a name trading at nosebleed multiples with decelerating revenue. Kering, meanwhile, enters the second half with optionality: if jewelry gains traction and Gucci stabilizes, the stock remains 30% off its 2021 highs and trades at a discount to LVMH on EV/EBITDA.

Watch Kering's jewelry revenue in the Q3 print, due late October. De Meo has guided to mid-single-digit growth in the division, but Street models assume jewelry contributes less than 12% of group EBITDA. If that mix shifts above 15% by year-end, Kering's margin profile improves structurally. For Hermès, the next data point is August sell-through in Hainan duty-free, where wait times for Birkins have compressed from eight months to four. If that trend continues, the waiting-list moat is weaker than the multiple suggests.

Kering's rally is a product-cycle win, not a sector tailwind. Hermès still prints cash, but the comps get harder, and the multiple assumes perfection.

The takeaway
Gucci's product refresh beat expectations and lifted Kering 16.9% while Hermès missed on tougher comps, reframing luxury hierarchy around execution over brand.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
