Kering closed up 10.8% in Paris trading on July 29 after Gucci reported second-quarter comparable sales down 20% year-over-year, narrower than the 23% decline analysts had modeled. The rally added roughly €3.1 billion in market value to the €40 billion group. LVMH and Hermès, which reported within forty-eight hours of Kering, traded flat to down 1.2% on the session.
The move isolated Kering from a sector-wide malaise that has persisted since October 2023. Gucci's new Borsetto and Paparazzo handbag lines, launched in April under creative director Sabato De Sarno, generated mid-single-digit unit growth in Europe and North America despite an overall revenue decline. Men's leather goods grew 6% sequentially, the first positive inflection since Q3 2022. Jewelry, a category Kering CEO Francesca Bellettini flagged in May as a strategic priority, posted 14% growth on a small base, driven by the High Jewelry capsule that debuted in Shanghai in March.
The divergence from LVMH and Hermès matters because it breaks an eighteen-month correlation where luxury stocks moved as a bloc on China demand signals. LVMH's Q2 fashion and leather goods sales grew 1%, missing the 3% consensus, while Hermès posted 11% growth, its slowest pace since 2020. Neither stock rallied. The market is now pricing product cycle over macro, a shift that rewards brands showing traction on new creative direction rather than waiting for Chinese consumers to return. Kering had traded at a 34% discount to LVMH on a price-to-sales basis entering the print; that gap narrowed to 29% by close.
Bellettini's jewelry bet carries execution risk. Jewelry contributed roughly 8% of Gucci's €9.9 billion in 2023 revenue, and the category has 42% gross margins versus 68% for handbags at legacy European houses. Scaling jewelry without cannibalizing leather goods requires separate store footprints and different sales training, which Kering has not historically managed cleanly. The company opened 12 Gucci jewelry corners in Q2, mostly in Asia, but has not disclosed same-store productivity. If jewelry grows to 15% of mix by 2026, as some buyside models assume, Gucci's blended margin compresses unless leather goods stabilize above current levels.
Operators should watch Gucci's September wholesale orders, which will reflect retailer confidence in the Borsetto line's longevity beyond the initial launch halo. Kering reports Q3 sales in mid-October; a second consecutive quarter of sequential improvement in men's leather goods would confirm the product cycle thesis. Bellettini has scheduled a Capital Markets Day for November, where the jewelry buildout plan will likely be detailed. Any guidance on store-level economics for the jewelry corners will move the stock.
The €3.1 billion added to Kering's market cap on July 29 erased six weeks of underperformance. The stock now trades at 12.4x forward earnings, still below the luxury peer average of 18.7x, but no longer at the 10.9x trough it touched in June. The next test is whether Gucci's momentum holds when Chinese Golden Week sales print in early October.
