KKR closed its first private credit continuation vehicle at $460 million in commitments with Allianz Global Investors taking the lead investor position. The structure allows KKR to roll existing credit exposures into a new fund without forcing early exits, extending hold periods while delivering partial liquidity to original limited partners.
Continuation vehicles have been a staple in private equity since 2019, typically used to extend ownership of portfolio companies past fund life. Applying the structure to credit is newer. KKR's move suggests the firm sees demand from institutional buyers willing to step into seasoned loan positions at a discount to par, particularly as first-generation direct lending funds from 2017-2019 approach their contractual end dates. The $460 million figure implies a portfolio of $600 million to $800 million in underlying credit exposures, assuming standard 60-70% loan-to-value ratios on the continuation structure.
AllianzGI's participation matters. The German insurer's asset management arm manages €577 billion and has been rotating out of public credit into private structures since 2021. Their willingness to lead here signals comfort with KKR's underwriting and a view that current credit spreads—SOFR plus 550-650 basis points on typical middle-market direct loans—offer adequate compensation for illiquidity. It also suggests Allianz sees better risk-adjusted returns in seasoned credit portfolios than in new origination, where competition has compressed spreads by 80-100 basis points since 2022.
The structure benefits KKR in three ways. First, it extends fee-earning assets under management without deploying new capital. Second, it offers partial liquidity to LPs who may have grown impatient with the 7-9 year maturity profile of direct lending funds. Third, it creates a template for future continuation vehicles as KKR's $55 billion credit platform matures. If continuation funds become standard practice, they functionally transform illiquid credit strategies into perpetual vehicles, much like business development companies but without public market disclosure requirements.
Operators should watch for similar structures from Apollo, Ares, and Blackstone, all of whom manage $50 billion-plus in private credit and face the same LP liquidity pressures. Expect announcements in the next six to nine months, particularly from funds raised in 2018-2019 that are now five to six years into deployment. Also watch for secondary market pricing on continuation fund stakes. If continuation vehicles trade at discounts wider than 8-10% to net asset value, it suggests institutional buyers see credit risk the original managers do not.
AllianzGI now owns a slice of KKR's credit book at a moment when default rates in sponsored middle-market loans are running at 3.2%, up from 1.1% in 2021 but still below the 4.5% long-term average. That timing is the trade.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
