LVMH Fashion Division Reports $22.2B Q2 Revenue, First Growth in Four Quarters

The recovery arrived without Chinese spending — wealth managers now recalibrating luxury exposure after eighteen months of rotation.

LVMH's fashion and leather goods division posted $22.20 billion in second-quarter revenue, marking the first sequential growth in four quarters and ending the longest contraction cycle for the Paris-based conglomerate since 2009. Shares traded down 2.56% in Tuesday's session despite the return to expansion, closing at €668.40 after an intraday swing that saw the stock rise 2% before reversing. The price action tells the story: growth returned, but margin compression and geographic mix remain unresolved.

The division — anchoring brands including Louis Vuitton, Dior, Celine, and Fendi — represents 48% of LVMH's consolidated revenue and 75% of operating profit at last report. Revenue growth of 1.8% year-over-year landed within the 1.5% to 2.5% range analysts had modeled, but the composition disappointed. European sales rose 4.2% while Asia ex-China grew 3.1%, but China itself posted flat revenue for the third consecutive quarter. North American sales, which had been the stabilizer through 2023, grew just 0.9%, the weakest performance in eleven quarters. The growth came from volume in lower-margin categories, not pricing power in core leather goods.

This matters because LVMH is the sector's bellwether, and family offices have been underweight European luxury since Q4 2023. The $850 billion global personal luxury goods market has been repricing assumptions around Chinese consumer recovery and U.S. aspirational spending simultaneously. LVMH's result confirms what Kering and Richemont have been signaling: the snapback thesis is dead, and 2025 is now a margin defense year, not a volume recovery year. Allocators who rotated into luxury names in March anticipating a Q2 inflection are now holding positions that returned to growth but did so by trading margin for volume in secondary cities. The 18-month derating cycle that took LVMH from a €905 January 2023 high to current levels has not finished.

The question for capital allocators is whether this marks the bottom or the beginning of a longer multiple compression. LVMH trades at 21.3x forward earnings, still elevated versus its 18x ten-year median, and the company has not yet begun the cost restructuring that peers initiated in Q1. If Chinese spending does not materially recover by Golden Week in October, the next move is workforce reductions in European ateliers and a 5% to 8% reduction in wholesale distribution points globally. That has historically taken two quarters to show up in margins but four quarters to show up in brand perception surveys.

Watch three events in sequence. First, Golden Week sales data in early October will clarify whether Chinese luxury consumption has stabilized or remains structurally impaired. Second, LVMH's Q3 earnings call in mid-October, where management will guide on holiday inventory and promotional posture. Third, any announcement regarding the Tiffany & Co. restructuring, which has been delayed twice and represents $2.1 billion in underperforming assets. If LVMH writes down Tiffany or announces a strategic review before year-end, that will be the signal that management is resetting the portfolio for a three-year normalization cycle, not a four-quarter rebound.

The return to growth is not the return to pricing power. LVMH sold more units at lower average transaction values in geographies that do not support the 62% gross margins the company printed in 2022. Allocators are now modeling a 2026 margin recovery, not 2025, and that assumes no further CNY depreciation and no U.S. recession. The stock moved down because the growth that arrived was not the growth the multiple was pricing.

The takeaway
LVMH returned to growth by trading margin for volume in secondary markets — the recovery timeline just extended twelve months.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
