MBV Investments LP closed its Jersey Expert Fund at $3.0 billion in initial commitments, with $2.5 billion coming from the Al Mazroui Group as anchor investor. The commitment represents the largest single allocation to a Jersey-domiciled venture vehicle this cycle and marks the second time this quarter that a Gulf family office bypassed Delaware or Cayman structures in favor of European regulatory frameworks.
The Jersey Expert Fund operates under Jersey Financial Services Commission oversight, a regulatory path that offers Gulf investors familiar treaty structures without U.S. reporting friction. Al Mazroui Group, led by Chairman H.E. Rashed Al Mazroui, has committed capital across fourteen countries since 2019 but had not previously anchored a fund above $1.0 billion. The remaining $500 million in initial commitments came from undisclosed limited partners, which MBV has not named and likely will not.
This matters because Jersey domicile is now a Gulf preference, not a workaround. Three of the five largest Middle Eastern venture commitments in 2024 chose Jersey or Luxembourg over Cayman. The appeal is treaty access to European portfolio companies, simplified substance requirements, and distance from U.S. tax and disclosure regimes. When a $2.5 billion check writes into a fund that did not exist eighteen months ago, the structure itself is the signal. MBV has not disclosed portfolio focus, but the Expert Fund classification under Jersey rules suggests concentrated bets in private credit, growth equity, or infrastructure rather than early-stage venture. The anchor commitment also implies board involvement or co-investment rights, standard at this scale, which means Al Mazroui will shape deployment pace and sector tilt.
Allocators should watch for MBV's first portfolio announcements within sixty days, which will clarify whether this is European infrastructure, U.S. growth buyouts, or cross-border private credit. Al Mazroui's prior allocations have leaned toward real assets and industrial adjacencies, so software-as-a-service or consumer internet would be off-pattern. The second item is follow-on fundraising. Funds that close at $3.0 billion with a single anchor often reopen at $4.5 billion to $5.0 billion within nine months once early portfolio IRR prints. Jersey funds must file beneficial ownership within six months of first close, so expect filings in Q2 2025 that reveal the other $500 million and possibly additional commitments that arrived after announcement.
The Al Mazroui Group has now committed more capital to Jersey vehicles than to Cayman vehicles year-to-date.
