Sotheby's H1 2026 Revenue Hits $4.4B, Private Treaty Clears $826M Record

Auction house posted 59% year-over-year gain as ultra-wealthy shift buying off the podium into bespoke deals.

Sotheby's reported $4.4 billion in first-half 2026 sales, a 59 percent increase over the same period last year and the strongest six-month performance in the house's 282-year history. Private-treaty transactions—off-podium deals negotiated directly between seller and buyer—accounted for $826 million of that total, an all-time high for the channel and a 47 percent gain over H1 2025.

The earnings release, published mid-July, showed auction revenue climbing to $3.57 billion while guarantees issued to consignors rose 22 percent, reflecting tighter competition for trophy estates. Sotheby's did not break out regional performance, but noted that Asian buyers accounted for 34 percent of private-treaty volume, up from 28 percent a year earlier. The house cleared three single-owner collections valued above $200 million each during the period, none of which went to public sale.

The shift toward private treaty matters because it changes the risk profile of the auction business. Public sales generate headline drama and benchmark pricing, but private deals carry lower execution risk, shorter settlement cycles, and zero buyer premium leakage to competitors. When $826 million moves off the podium in six months, it suggests ultra-high-net-worth sellers now prefer certainty and discretion over competitive bidding theater. That is a structural change, not a cyclical one. It also compresses the time between consignment and cash, which matters in a year when central banks have kept rates elevated and liquidity-sensitive families are rotating out of illiquid collectibles into private credit or direct infrastructure.

The 59 percent top-line gain outpaced Christie's reported 41 percent increase for the same period, though Christie's remains privately held and does not disclose private-treaty splits. Both houses are riding a post-2024 recovery in discretionary spending among families with investable assets above $500 million, a cohort that contracted art and collectibles exposure sharply in 2023 and early 2024. Sotheby's guarantee book, now exceeding $1.1 billion in outstanding commitments, reflects the house's willingness to deploy balance sheet to win high-nine-figure estates. That bet works if secondary-market liquidity holds and if the house can move consigned works through private channels before auction-day risk materializes.

Operators should watch September's Impressionist and Modern evening sale in New York, where Sotheby's will test pricing on three guaranteed Monet works acquired from a European estate earlier this year. The house has pre-placed one of the three privately, according to two people familiar with the transaction, which would reduce podium exposure but also remove a potential price-discovery moment. Also worth monitoring: the October contemporary sale in Hong Kong, where Sotheby's has committed guarantees on two Zao Wou-Ki paintings estimated at a combined $85 million. If those clear at or above estimate, the Asia private-treaty pipeline likely remains open. If they struggle, the 34 percent Asian share in H1 may prove optimistic.

The record half does not erase structural headwinds. Sotheby's carries $1.7 billion in term debt, most of it issued in 2019 when the house was taken private by telecom investor Patrick Drahi. Interest expense now runs near $140 million annually, and while H1 EBITDA covered that comfortably, the guarantee book ties up capital that could otherwise service debt or fund digital infrastructure. The art market does not compound; it reprices. The question for allocators is whether $4.4 billion in six months reflects new baseline demand or a temporary clearing of pent-up consignments from families who postponed sales during the 2023-2024 slowdown. The private-treaty number, at least, suggests demand is migrating to channels where price is negotiated in private and settlement happens within 30 days, not 60.

The takeaway
Sotheby's $826M private-treaty record signals ultra-wealthy prefer bespoke execution over auction drama; watch September Monet guarantees for pricing confirmation.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
