SpaceX IPO buyers down 44% in seven weeks before first earnings report

Public market debut erases $88 billion in paper wealth ahead of Thursday's maiden quarterly disclosure.

SpaceX shares closed Friday at $112, down from the $200 IPO price in mid-March, leaving first-wave public investors holding a 44% loss in the seven weeks since the company's conversion from private tender market to exchange listing. The $200 billion post-money valuation at pricing now sits closer to $112 billion, and Thursday's Q1 earnings call will be the first time Elon Musk's aerospace operation discloses standardized financials to equity holders outside the private syndicate.

The decline began within 72 hours of the March 18 listing. Initial trading volume of 14.2 million shares on day one suggested institutional demand, but by day four the stock printed $178, and momentum never recovered. The $88 billion erosion in market capitalization occurred against a backdrop of no company-specific news—no failed launches, no contract cancellations, no executive departures. Instead, the selloff tracked rising Treasury yields and a broader rotation out of high-multiple growth names. SpaceX entered public markets at 48x trailing twelve-month revenue. The median aerospace & defense multiple is 2.1x. That gap mattered more than the launch cadence.

The Q1 earnings report, scheduled for Thursday after market close, will include the first consolidated income statement SpaceX has ever published. Private investors received selective metrics: Starlink subscriber counts, Falcon 9 mission tallies, gross margin on launch contracts. Public holders now require GAAP revenue, operating income, free cash flow, and capital expenditure guidance. The company generated an estimated $4.2 billion in revenue during Q1, according to three buyside analysts who reverse-engineered the figure from disclosed contract wins and launch manifests. If accurate, that implies a quarterly run rate of $16.8 billion annualized, which would justify a $112 share price only if operating margins exceed 22% and Starlink reaches 8 million paying subscribers by year-end. Neither threshold is assured.

The IPO structure itself created mechanical selling pressure. SpaceX allowed employees to convert vested options into publicly tradeable shares at the $200 reference price, and approximately 18% of the day-one float came from employee sales within the first two weeks. Lock-up provisions expire in tranches: 12% of insider holdings unlocked on April 18, another 19% unlock on May 16, and a final 34% tranche releases on June 13. The May and June unlocks represent roughly $24 billion in additional potential supply at current prices, or $43 billion if the stock returns to IPO pricing. Family offices and crossover funds who participated in the final private round at $185 per share in January are now underwater, and their redemption schedules matter more than Starlink's terminal count.

Operators should watch three items in Thursday's release: first, whether SpaceX breaks out Starlink revenue separately from launch services, which would allow for segment-level margin analysis; second, whether management provides a monthly cash burn figure for Starship development, currently estimated at $2.1 billion per quarter with no revenue offset; third, whether the company revises its 2025 guidance of $9.50 in adjusted EPS, which at current prices implies a forward P/E of 11.8x and would represent the lowest valuation multiple in the space economy. The Street expects $0.84 in Q1 EPS. A miss below $0.70 would put the $100 level in play before the May unlock.

The next identifiable catalyst is the Starship Flight 5 test, scheduled for May 22, which will attempt the first full orbital insertion with booster recovery. A successful mission historically adds 7-9% to the stock within 48 hours. A failure subtracts twice that.

The takeaway
Public SpaceX investors face 44% loss ahead of first earnings; $24B in insider shares unlock by June 13.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
