Netflix Enters $1B+ Bidding War With ESPN, FOX for 2030 FIFA World Cup U.S. Rights

Streaming giant's first true quadrennial-event play tests whether FIFA will split packages or preserve traditional broadcaster bundles.

Netflix has notified FIFA of its intent to bid for U.S. media rights to the 2030 FIFA World Cup, setting up a three-way contest with ESPN and FOX that media buyers expect to clear $1 billion for the first time in tournament history. The tender period opened last week with bids due March 15th, according to two executives briefed on the process.

The 2026 tournament—co-hosted by the U.S., Mexico, and Canada—sold to FOX and Telemundo for $425 million in a 2015 deal that now looks quaint. That cycle predates Netflix's NFL Christmas broadcasts, Apple's MLS package, and Amazon's Thursday Night Football buy. The 2030 event, awarded to a Spain-Portugal-Morocco tri-continental bid with symbolic South American matches, marks the first World Cup cycle negotiated entirely in the post-bundle era. FIFA has not yet confirmed whether it will sell rights as a single package or split English and Spanish rights, a decision that determines whether Netflix can cherry-pick or must compete for the entire footprint.

For Netflix, this is about 283 million global subscribers and the calculus that live sports drive December sign-ups. The company's NFL doubleheader on Christmas Day drew 65 million global viewers across two games, per Nielsen, giving executives confidence they can handle a six-week tournament that peaks at 15-20 million concurrent U.S. viewers for a final. Netflix has no sports infrastructure—no studio shows, no commentator roster, no shoulder programming. That's intentional. The pitch is event-only: stream every match, let viewers pick their own highlights, skip the desk. One executive familiar with the bid described it as "the Spotify model for the World Cup," though whether FIFA will accept a platform with no sports credibility remains unclear.

ESPN enters as the incumbent's heir. Parent company Disney owns U.S. English rights to the 2027 Women's World Cup and considers the men's tournament the anchor for its direct-to-consumer strategy. The network is preparing to launch a standalone ESPN streaming service in 2025, and a World Cup package—even at $1.2 billion—gives it the four-year content spine needed to justify subscription pricing. FOX, which holds rights through 2026, has aired the men's tournament since 2011 and views the property as its quadrennial Super Bowl. The network has already cleared July 2030 for final scheduling and is expected to bid north of $1 billion to retain.

The broader question is whether FIFA, emboldened by the $5.4 billion it collected globally for 2018 and 2022 rights, will now split U.S. packages by language, by window, or by match tier. The English-language audience skews younger and more digital; Spanish-language viewership remains appointment television. If FIFA splits, Netflix likely bids only on English. If bundled, the winner also controls Telemundo's 2026 successor, which could be NBCUniversal, Univision, or an ESPN-Univision joint venture. One media buyer called it "the most consequential North American sports-rights decision since the NFL sold Thursday nights."

Three items to track: FIFA's package structure announcement, expected by late February; Netflix's commentator hires, if any, which would signal seriousness; and Disney's willingness to exceed $1.5 billion if FOX pushes. The bidding window closes March 15th. Award expected by May, in time for FIFA's annual congress in Jakarta. The 2030 tournament kicks off July 2030, a date circled by every U.S. network's programming chief since 2018.

Netflix has never paid more than $150 million annually for a sports property. A $1.2 billion World Cup bid would represent roughly $300 million per year amortized across the four-year cycle. That's not irrational for a company that spent $17 billion on content in 2023. It's just new. The person who greenlit the NFL games also controls this bid. The same calculus applies: live events drive Q4 subscriber growth, and nothing delivers global simultaneity like a World Cup final. Whether FIFA trusts a platform with no sports legacy to execute a 64-match tournament is the only question left. The bids will answer it by mid-March.

The takeaway
Netflix's **$1B+** World Cup bid tests FIFA's willingness to break from traditional broadcasters and whether streamers can handle quadrennial-event scale.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
