Adidas Locks Overtime Elite Through 2028, New Balance Circles Nike's Youth Hoops Footprint

Two mid-tier brands extend high school basketball sponsorships as Gen-Z's sneaker allegiance shifts away from Swoosh dominance.

Adidas announced a multi-year extension with Overtime Elite, keeping its footwear and apparel deal with the Atlanta-based high school basketball league through at least 2028. The German brand has sponsored OTE since the league's 2021 launch, outfitting roughly 30 players annually across two teams that compete outside traditional high school governance. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the deal includes game uniforms, practice gear, and player stipends tied to social content.

OTE's model—paying $100,000 salaries to 16-to-18-year-olds who skip NCAA eligibility—has produced nine NBA Draft selections in three years, including twin guards Amen and Ausar Thompson, both top-five picks in 2023. The league streams games on YouTube to an audience that skews 13-to-24, a cohort Nike has progressively alienated through high retail prices and limited distribution of marquee models. Adidas is betting that visibility at this demographic inflection point offsets the league's narrow 100,000 weekly viewership.

New Balance, meanwhile, continues its three-year positioning campaign as the brand that answers when Nike doesn't. The Boston-based company sponsors OTE rival Overtime Select and pays mid-six-figure endorsements to high school phenoms before they reach college. It signed 17-year-old forward Cooper Flagg, projected as the 2025 NBA Draft's top pick, in a deal reportedly worth $2 million annually before Duke enrollment. New Balance's youth basketball strategy is narrow: sign 10-to-15 elite players under 20, keep them through draft night, and let Instagram do the demographic work.

The sponsorship extension and competitive positioning matter because Nike's $51 billion annual revenue increasingly comes from retro Jordan releases and international soccer, not American basketball innovation. The brand's domestic basketball footwear revenue declined 7% year-over-year through Q3 2024, while Adidas basketball grew 11% and New Balance's entire footwear segment grew 22%. Gen-Z's sneaker rotation now includes Hoka running shoes, Adidas Samba reissues, and New Balance 550s—none of which existed as cultural objects five years ago.

Adidas is treating OTE as a content incubator more than a traditional sponsorship. The brand's deal includes co-produced YouTube series, TikTok integrations, and player appearances at Adidas's North American Basketball Summit each June. The league's average player has 180,000 Instagram followers, roughly 3x the average NCAA Division I starter, and posts 40% more frequently. Adidas is accessing that audience for approximately $8 million annually across team and player deals, according to two people familiar with OTE's sponsorship structure.

New Balance's calculus is different. The brand operates no basketball academies, sponsors no AAU circuits, and employs four basketball scouts compared to Nike's 60. It writes large checks to a small number of visible teenagers, then waits. Flagg's Duke freshman season averaged 4.2 million ESPN viewers per game, and his white New Balance TWO WXY v5s were the third-most-searched basketball sneaker on StockX during February. The company sold out its initial 12,000-pair production run in 90 minutes.

What to watch: Adidas will announce its 2025 OTE player signings in June, typically 8-to-10 incoming prospects who receive gear packages worth $40,000 retail. New Balance is negotiating with 2026 draft prospect Ace Bailey, whose NIL valuation sits at $1.8 million and whose current Nike deal expires in August. Nike has not sponsored a high school basketball league since discontinuing its EYBL circuit's apparel component in 2022, but the company is expected to re-enter youth hoops through name-image-likeness deals once NCAA transfer portal activity settles in late spring.

The displacement Nike fears is not market share but cultural inevitability. Adidas and New Balance are not trying to win; they are trying to make the 13-to-19 cohort forget Nike was once the only answer.

The takeaway
Adidas and New Balance are spending mid-eight-figures annually to own the moment Gen-Z decides Nike is optional.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
