Alpine F1 Ownership Deadline Passes Quietly; Renault Group Restructuring Window Opens

Critical date in internal negotiations clears path for stake sales, sponsor realignments, and C-suite moves before Imola.

A contractual deadline inside Renault Group's Formula 1 holding structure passed without extension last week, opening a 90-day window for Alpine F1 ownership changes that team principals and sponsor counsel have been modeling since December. The date—understood to be tied to consent rights held by early equity partners—removes a blocking position that previously required unanimous approval for stake transfers above 15 percent.

The team finished sixth in the 2024 constructors' championship with just 65 points, its worst result since returning as Alpine in 2021. Revenue from the sport's prize fund dropped $23 million year-over-year as a result. Two title sponsors are now inside renewal windows that close before the Monaco Grand Prix in May, and both are known to have requested clarity on governance before committing to multi-year extensions. One deal is worth $42 million annually; the other is structured as $18 million cash plus performance bonuses that were not triggered in 2024.

Renault Group CEO Luca de Meo has publicly backed the F1 program as a brand platform, but the parent company's automotive division reported negative free cash flow of €1.8 billion in Q4 2024. Three investment groups—two U.S.-based, one Gulf-backed—are understood to have submitted non-binding proposals for minority stakes in the team between 20 and 40 percent. Terms vary, but all three structures include provisions for increased investment if the team finishes inside the top five by the end of 2026, when new power unit regulations arrive.

The timing matters for personnel. Team principal Bruno Famin, who took the role mid-2023 after Otmar Szafnauer's exit, is on a contract through 2025 with a performance review clause that activates if the team finishes outside the top six again. Two senior technical directors are also inside notice windows. Paddock recruitment activity around Alpine picked up in Melbourne, with at least one sporting director from a top-four team confirming preliminary contact. Alpine's engineering budget for the 2025 car is set at $145 million, roughly $35 million below McLaren's spend, and any new investor would likely push for immediate reallocation toward aero development before the June upgrade package.

Sponsors are reading the same signals. BWT, the water-treatment company that supplies Alpine's title branding, is inside its final year and has not yet triggered the two-year extension option that was supposed to activate by March 31. Separately, Puma's technical partnership—worth roughly $8 million annually in co-branded merchandising and team wear—is up for renewal in July, and the German sportswear brand has been seen in the Red Bull and Mercedes hospitality suites in recent months. Both sponsors are known to want clarity on team leadership and budget commitments before re-signing.

The restructuring window closes in mid-June, roughly two weeks after the Monaco Grand Prix. That creates a compressed timeline: any deal involving a stake above 25 percent requires FIA approval, which typically takes 4-6 weeks. If a transaction is signed by early May, it would clear in time for the new investor to influence mid-season budget decisions, including whether to accelerate development of the 2026 power unit or lease Red Bull's hybrid system under the new supplier rules. Three team insiders expect a decision before Imola, where Renault Group's board is scheduled to attend for what one called "a walk-through with options."

Alpine's commercial division is also preparing for fallout. The team's Enstone factory employs over 800 people, and any change in ownership structure triggers consultation requirements under UK employment law. One scenario being modeled involves a partial sale of the racing operation while Renault retains the power unit division, which supplies customer teams and generates roughly $30 million in annual revenue. That structure would require new agreements with Alpine's current engine customers, who are on contracts through 2025.

The next visible signal will be team principal attendance at the April 15 FIA Strategy Group meeting in London, where ownership changes above 20 percent must be disclosed within 30 days.

The takeaway
Alpine's ownership restructuring window is now open through mid-June, with three investor groups circling and two title sponsors waiting for clarity before Monaco.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable.
