Kevin Stefanski's Atlanta Falcons Start 0–2, Score 16 Points in Two Games

New regime's offensive scheme misfires early, raising front-office questions before Week 3.

The Atlanta Falcons have scored 16 points through two games under first-year head coach Kevin Stefanski, losing to Pittsburgh 18–3 and to Philadelphia 13–10. The offensive output ranks 32nd in the league. Stefanski, hired in January after Cleveland declined to extend his contract, brought offensive coordinator Zac Robinson from the Rams and installed a zone-heavy rushing scheme designed around Kirk Cousins' $180 million guaranteed contract.

The scheme isn't working. Cousins has thrown for 437 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. The rushing attack, expected to benefit from Bijan Robinson's $14.2 million fully guaranteed rookie deal, is averaging 78 yards per game, which ranks 29th. Robinson has 23 carries for 91 yards. The Falcons converted 3 of 24 third downs across both games. Stefanski called plays in both contests, a departure from his Cleveland tenure where he delegated after 2021.

The timing creates leverage problems. General manager Terry Fontenot, who hired Stefanski after Arthur Smith's firing, is working the final year of his deal without an extension. Owner Arthur Blank historically grants new coaches three seasons, but he also fired Dan Quinn after an 0–5 start in 2020. Blank, 81, has attended both games and was seen in extended conversation with team president Rich McKay after the Philadelphia loss. McKay, who rebuilt the business side after the stadium deal, rarely appears in the postgame corridor unless discussing structural issues.

The $90 million Mercedes-Benz Stadium retrofit, completed in July, added 22 premium suites priced at $350,000 annually. Early renewal conversations for those suites begin in October. Suite holders typically reference on-field product during September negotiations, and 0–2 starts historically depress three-year commitment rates by 12–18% across the league, per venue consultants who work NFL deals. The Falcons also have a $220 million stadium debt service payment due in Q4, structured around anticipated playoff revenue that becomes uncertain if the team misses the postseason.

Stefanski's contract, believed to be four years near $7 million annually, includes offset language standard for first-time head coaches. If Blank moves before Year 2, the financial hit is manageable but the optics are poor given the Desmond Ridder mismanagement that preceded this. Atlanta drafted Ridder in the third round in 2022, started him for 13 games in 2023, then pivoted to Cousins without giving Ridder a full second season. The front office sold Stefanski as the quarterback whisperer who fixed Baker Mayfield, but Mayfield's Cleveland success was one playoff season in five years.

The coordinator market is already moving. Ben Johnson, Lions offensive coordinator, is the betting favorite for the next wave of hires and has a relationship with Blank's son Denny, who sits on the search committee. Mike Vrabel, available after Tennessee, has been seen twice at Mercedes-Benz Stadium this summer for non-football events, which league personnel track. Arthur Smith, now Pittsburgh's offensive coordinator, called a 18–3 win against his former team in Week 1 using the same personnel concepts Atlanta abandoned.

The Falcons face Kansas City in Week 3 at home on Sunday Night Football, a 8:20pm ET kickoff with flexing implications. A blowout loss puts Stefanski at 0–3 heading into a divisional stretch against New Orleans and Tampa Bay. Historically, 12% of head coaches who start 0–3 finish the season. The quarterback decision—whether to consider Ridder or rookie Michael Penix Jr., drafted 8th overall with $23.8 million guaranteed—becomes unavoidable if the offense fails to score 20 points against Kansas City.

Fontenot's extension talks, paused in August, are expected to resume after Week 6. That timeline now looks political.

The takeaway
Stefanski's **16-point** start threatens both his job security and GM Fontenot's extension leverage before premium suite renewals begin in October.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
