Three Tennis Tournaments in Talks with Prediction Markets as Player Ban Holds

ATP and WTA events explore partnerships while individual athletes remain locked out of the category entirely.

Three major tennis tournaments are negotiating partnerships with prediction-market operators, according to people familiar with the discussions. The conversations involve at least one ATP Masters 1000 event, one WTA 1000, and one ATP 500 tournament. Terms under discussion include court-level branding, digital inventory packages, and data-feed integration worth $2 million to $4 million annually per property. None of the three have signed.

The ATP and WTA both prohibit their players from accepting direct sponsorship from betting or prediction-market operators. Tournament operators face no such restriction. The Grand Slam Board, which oversees the four majors, has not issued public guidance on prediction markets but continues to permit traditional sportsbook partnerships at the Australian Open, Roland-Garros, and US Open. Wimbledon maintains a narrower commercial posture across all gambling categories. The structural gap means tournaments can monetize a category their athletes cannot touch, creating a revenue wedge that player agents are beginning to notice.

Prediction markets occupy ambiguous regulatory space. Kalshi operates under CFTC oversight as a derivatives exchange. Polymarket, which moved offshore after a $1.4 million CFTC settlement in 2022, does not hold a US license but serves American users through non-KYC interfaces. PredictIt runs under a no-action letter from the CFTC that limits contract size and user participation. Tennis tournaments considering partnerships must navigate state-by-state enforcement postures, player-union optics, and the risk that a platform's regulatory status shifts mid-contract. One tournament operator involved in the talks described the diligence process as "more expensive than the deal."

The commercial logic is clean. Prediction markets skew younger and more engaged than traditional sportsbook users, according to data from a sponsorship consultancy that has pitched three tennis properties in the past six months. Live-betting correlation is high: 68% of Kalshi tennis-contract volume occurs in-match, compared to 54% for traditional moneyline wagers, per the consultancy's review of July and August handle. That behavior makes prediction-market users better targets for hospitality upsells, premium streaming tiers, and retention-focused sponsor activations. A WTA tournament executive said his event's digital team views prediction markets as "a behavior we want in the building, not just a logo."

Player exclusion from the category creates tension. One top-30 ATP player's agent said his client has been approached by a prediction-market platform willing to structure a deal as "educational content" rather than endorsement, a framing the ATP has not approved. The agent declined to name the platform. WTA rules are similar. The player ban exists to preserve competitive integrity, a principle established after betting scandals in the mid-2000s. But prediction markets on non-match outcomes—season win totals, award voting, injury return dates—present a different risk surface than match-betting, and some player representatives believe the tours are applying an outdated framework. The ATP's integrity unit has not commented.

Two of the three tournaments in talks are expected to make decisions by the end of Q1 2025, ahead of contract activations for the spring hard-court season. The third is on a longer cycle tied to title-sponsor renewal. One tournament's negotiation includes a clause that automatically cancels the deal if the platform loses its US operating status, with no termination fee. Another is requiring the platform to cover legal costs if a player or tour challenges the partnership. Both provisions are unusual in tennis sponsorship but reflect the category's fluid regulatory position.

Watch for the first signed deal to include public language distinguishing prediction markets from sports betting. The framing will matter for subsequent tour-level guidance. Also watch whether any platform attempts a workaround on player deals by signing recently retired athletes—2023 retirees are not subject to ATP or WTA commercial rules but still carry audience value. Kalshi has hired a sports-partnership lead from DraftKings; her previous role focused on athlete endorsements.

The takeaway
Tournaments can monetize prediction markets while players cannot, creating a structural revenue gap that agents are starting to price into broader sponsorship strategy.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
