Aflac Kickoff Game cuts multimillion-dollar NIL deal with Auburn ahead of Baylor opener

Event sponsors now bidding directly for rosters—bypassing the school, the collective, and the conference.

The Aflac Kickoff Game announced a name, image, and likeness partnership with Auburn's football roster Tuesday, ahead of the Tigers' Sept. 5 opener against Baylor in Atlanta. The Peach Bowl, which operates the neutral-site season opener, disclosed the deal as multimillion-dollar but declined to specify total value or per-player breakdown. Auburn athletic director John Cohen confirmed roster participation is voluntary; roughly 85 scholarship players are eligible.

This marks the first disclosed instance of a bowl operator contracting NIL rights independently from a school or its collective. Previous neutral-site deals—Chick-fil-A Kickoff, AdvoCare Classic—routed sponsorship dollars through athletic departments or third-party collectives structured as booster entities. The Aflac structure pays players directly through a clearinghouse managed by Opendorse, the athlete-marketing platform Auburn uses for NIL compliance tracking. The Peach Bowl pays the platform; the platform disburses to individual bank accounts within 72 hours of contract signature. Auburn's compliance office pre-approved the arrangement in May, according to a person familiar with the process.

The implications tilt two directions. First, event sponsors can now bypass conference revenue-share models and write checks to the specific rosters that generate their broadcast value. The Aflac Kickoff Game draws roughly 4 million viewers when marquee programs participate; that's a discrete, measurable audience for a term-life insurer targeting college-educated households. Second, this creates a new bid dynamic for non-playoff neutral sites. If the Kickoff Game can deliver seven figures in direct NIL, programs negotiating future neutral-site commitments will use that as a comp. Expect athletic directors to request NIL guarantees in game contracts starting in the 2027 cycle, when the next wave of marquee openers gets booked. One Power Four scheduling director, speaking off the record, said his office is already modeling NIL as a line item in neutral-site pro formas.

Auburn arrives in Atlanta with a roster that returned 62% of its offensive production from last season and added a top-15 transfer class, per Pro Football Focus. Baylor, under third-year coach Dave Aranda, installed a new offensive coordinator in January and lost its starting quarterback to the draft. The point spread opened Auburn -6.5; early action pushed it to -7. Aflac's brand presence includes in-stadium signage, jersey patches worn during warmups, and a halftime activation featuring the company's mascot duck. The deal does not include logo rights on game-worn jerseys, which remain governed by Auburn's primary apparel contract with Under Armour.

Watch whether other bowl operators follow the Peach Bowl's structure before the season starts. The Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game—also in Atlanta, operated by a separate entity—hosts Clemson and LSU on Sept. 1. That game's sponsor has not disclosed NIL plans, but Clemson's collective, The Tiger Impact Fund, has been in exploratory talks with the game's organizers since March, according to a booster briefed on the conversations. If a second neutral site announces a similar deal before Labor Day, the NIL line item becomes standard.

Auburn kicks off its season in 53 days. The Aflac Kickoff Game has sold 68,000 tickets, roughly 95% of Mercedes-Benz Stadium's football capacity.

The takeaway
Event sponsors can now contract rosters directly, bypassing schools—creating a new bid layer for neutral-site bookings starting in 2027.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
