Auburn Takes Multimillion-Dollar NIL Deal From Aflac Kickoff Game Before Baylor Opener

Kickoff game organizers now writing checks directly to rosters, not just athletic departments—a blueprint other bowls are watching.

Auburn secured a multimillion-dollar name, image, and likeness deal from the Aflac Kickoff Game ahead of its September 5 matchup against Baylor in Atlanta. The Peach Bowl, which operates the Kickoff Game, announced the arrangement Tuesday. Financial terms were not disclosed beyond the multimillion threshold, but the structure marks the first time a major kickoff game has paid a participating school's collective directly rather than routing money through traditional sponsorship channels.

The deal flows through Auburn's NIL collective, which will distribute payments to the roster under standard collective agreements. Aflac, the game's title sponsor since 2012, is not directly party to the NIL arrangement—the Kickoff Game itself is the contracting entity. That distinction matters. Bowl and kickoff game organizers have historically paid guarantee fees to athletic departments, typically $4 million to $6 million per team for marquee neutral-site openers. This payment sits adjacent to that structure, creating a second revenue stream that lands in athlete pockets within weeks of the game rather than in department budgets over fiscal quarters.

The mechanics are straightforward but the precedent is loud. Kickoff games have become loss leaders for bowl organizers—ticket revenue and local sponsorship rarely cover two guarantee checks plus operational overhead. But those games generate television inventory that ESPN and other networks value highly, often slotting them in prime Labor Day weekend windows. If bowl operators can convert that television value into NIL leverage, they suddenly hold a card that matters to recruits, transfers, and the coaches who pitch them. Auburn's collective now has a talking point that Baylor's does not, at least for this cycle.

The timing is precise. Auburn hired Hugh Freeze in November 2022, paying him $6.5 million annually and tasking him with closing a recruiting gap against Georgia and Alabama. Freeze's first season finished 6-6. His second ended 5-7. The roster has churned through the transfer portal—Auburn added 22 transfers for 2024—and NIL funding is the variable that determines whether those transfers are rotation pieces or starters. Collectives typically raise funds from boosters in uneven lumps; a guaranteed seven-figure check from a kickoff game provides budget certainty that few collectives enjoy. Auburn can now promise specific NIL figures before the season starts, not after donors write third-quarter checks.

Other bowl operators are watching. The Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game, the Duke's Mayo Classic, and the Las Vegas Bowl all stage early-season neutral-site games with comparable television slots and sponsor relationships. None has publicly announced a similar NIL structure, but the underlying economics are identical: bowls need content differentiation, teams need NIL capital, and television contracts create enough surplus to fund both. The Peach Bowl's move is a proof of concept. If Auburn's recruiting and portal classes show measurable improvement over Baylor's in the next cycle, expect other bowls to pitch NIL deals as part of their standard invitation packages.

Aflac's own calculus is less clear. The insurance company has invested heavily in college football sponsorships—it holds naming rights to Auburn's field house and runs the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center in Columbus, Georgia. But Aflac is not legally tied to this NIL deal, and it is not clear whether the Kickoff Game's NIL budget comes from Aflac's title sponsorship fee or from separate bowl revenue. That distinction will matter when tax advisors and compliance officers parse the arrangement. NIL collectives are 501(c)(3) entities in some states and for-profit LLCs in others; the flow of funds determines which deductions apply and which reporting requirements follow.

The game itself is a known quantity. Auburn and Baylor met in the 2017 Texas Bowl, and both programs are trying to climb back into New Year's Six relevance after middling seasons. But the NIL angle is the sharper story. Freeze now has a recruiting pitch that involves a specific check from a specific source, not a vague promise about booster commitments. Baylor coach Dave Aranda does not, unless his collective finds an equivalent deal in the next four months.

Watch whether other Peach Bowl-operated events—the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl itself in December—extend similar NIL offers to their participants. If so, the Peach Bowl has created a vertically integrated NIL strategy that gives it leverage over other bowls. Watch also whether Auburn's 2025 recruiting class, which currently ranks 21st nationally according to 247Sports, moves up after this deal closes. Collectives do not publish their rosters of funded athletes, but transfer portal additions in May and June will signal whether the Kickoff Game money is real or decorative.

The takeaway
Kickoff game organizers are now NIL buyers, not just host committees—giving bowls a new card to play in team selection and recruiting.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
