Kickoff Game signs multimillion-dollar Auburn team NIL deal ahead of Baylor opener

Event-level collective deal shifts NIL from booster clubs to tentpole scheduling—and gives commissioners a new lever.

The Aflac Kickoff Game committed a multimillion-dollar name, image and likeness package to Auburn's roster ahead of the Tigers' September 5 opener against Baylor in Atlanta. The deal, announced Tuesday by Peach Bowl Inc., marks the first time a neutral-site season opener has structured NIL as part of the appearance fee.

The package flows directly to Auburn players through the school's collective. Exact figures remain undisclosed, but two people familiar with the structure said the low seven-figure commitment sits atop Auburn's existing $3 million game guarantee. Baylor's deal contains no comparable NIL component. The activation includes on-field branding, social media obligations, and a pre-game autograph session at the College Football Hall of Fame.

This matters because it rewires the math of neutral-site scheduling. Conference commissioners have spent two years complaining that powerhouse programs resist opener commitments because they generate less revenue than home games. Adding NIL to the bid makes the trip incrementally more attractive to the roster—and to the head coach explaining the decision. One Power Four scheduling director said his phone lit up within an hour of the announcement: three neutral-site operators asking whether their bowls could structure similar packages for 2027 kickoff inventory.

The structure also creates a new asymmetry. Auburn's players receive cash; Baylor's do not. That imbalance will not survive contact with agent gossip or locker-room group texts. Baylor's collective, The 1845 Club, declined comment, but one booster said privately that the school is "evaluating options" for Baylor's 2027 neutral-site slate. The Kickoff Game itself confirmed it is in discussions with both participants for next year's matchup, with "NIL parity" language now standard in negotiation.

Peach Bowl Inc. operates three neutral-site openers annually, all at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The organization has quietly met with six collectives since March, according to a consultant who sat in two of those sessions. The model under discussion: bowl operator contributes a fixed NIL pool, split evenly between both rosters, structured as a bonus above the school's guarantee. The wrinkle is timing—collectives prefer certainty in January when recruiting closes; bowl operators commit inventory in April when TV windows finalize.

Auburn's NIL infrastructure made the deal easier to execute. The Tigers Unlimited collective, relaunched in February after a donor shakeup, already aggregates corporate sponsorships into pooled roster payments. The Kickoff Game's contribution flows into that pool, which distributes payments quarterly based on playing time and media obligations. That structure insulates individual athletes from tax complexity and gives the bowl a single counterparty.

The deal also signals Auburn's prioritization of early-season visibility. Head coach Hugh Freeze's rebuild leans heavily on transfer portal additions—11 scholarship newcomers—and a marquee opener in a pro stadium generates more recruiting content than a September cupcake at Jordan-Hare. One SEC assistant coach, speaking on background, noted that Auburn's home schedule includes FCS opponent Mercer and a bye week in October: "They're banking prime September visibility now because November's going to be a slog."

Baylor, meanwhile, operates under a different constraint. Big 12 policy caps neutral-site games at one per season unless both ADs petition the conference office. Baylor already committed to a 2027 opener against TCU at AT&T Stadium, meaning the school cannot schedule another neutral game without forfeiting a home date. Auburn faces no such restriction in the SEC's new 16-team format, which allows two neutral-site games provided one occurs before October.

The Kickoff Game has sold 87% of its premium inventory for the September 5 doubleheader, which also features Florida State against Alabama. That game carries no NIL component, though Peach Bowl Inc. declined to say whether one was offered. Alabama's collective, The Yea Alabama Fund, has committed more than $10 million annually to roster retention and does not typically pursue event-level sponsorships.

Watch for Chick-fil-A Kickoff and Advocare Classic—the other two Atlanta-based neutral openers—to announce similar structures before the end of August. Both events have open 2027 inventory and existing relationships with collectives at their target schools. The wildcard is whether ESPN, which owns broadcast rights to all three games, will require NIL contribution disclosure as part of team selection criteria. One network executive said the company is "monitoring" but has not yet formalized a policy.

The takeaway
Event-level NIL deals turn neutral-site openers into recruiting tools and create new bid asymmetries commissioners will have to manage.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable.
