Ravens OC Declan Doyle, 33, emerges as youngest HC candidate—McVay record at stake

Baltimore's first-year coordinator enters hiring cycle with age advantage and Lamar Jackson's resurgence as leverage.

Declan Doyle turned 33 in October. If hired before the 2025 season starts, he would break Sean McVay's record as the youngest head coach in modern NFL history—30 years, 339 days when the Rams handed him the job in January 2017.

Doyle spent one season as Ravens offensive coordinator after Todd Monken departed for Georgia. Baltimore ranked fourth in yards per play (6.1) and third in scoring (30.2 points per game) through Week 17. Lamar Jackson threw 41 touchdowns against 4 interceptions, the best ratio of his career. The Ravens secured the AFC North and the 3-seed, their highest playoff position since 2019. Doyle's play-action rate increased to 31%, up from Monken's 24% the prior season. He called 62% of designed run plays from under center, the highest share in the league among teams with a mobile quarterback.

The age matters for one reason: continuity windows. Owners sizing head-coach hires now model the same way private-equity shops model founder-CEO tenures—how many seasons can you extract before the inevitable reset. McVay signed an extension through 2026 after six seasons. Kyle Shanahan, hired at 37, is in Year 8 with the 49ers and locked through 2025. A coordinator hired at 33 could plausibly run a franchise for a decade if the first three years deliver playoff appearances. The median NFL head coach lasts 3.2 years. The median age at hire is 49. Doyle is 16 years below that line.

Four teams entered the offseason with vacancies: New Orleans, the New York Jets, Jacksonville, and Chicago. A fifth, Las Vegas, fired Antonio Pierce after one full season. Doyle interviewed with New Orleans and Chicago. The Saints job carries the worst short-term outlook—$62 million over the 2025 cap and no clear succession plan at quarterback. The Bears offer Caleb Williams, the first overall pick from 2024, and $82 million in projected cap space. Chicago has not hired a head coach under 40 since Mike Ditka in 1982. The front office replaced Ryan Poles' top lieutenant in January; the new GM reports to team president Kevin Warren, formerly of the Big Ten, who favors structure and pedigree. Doyle has neither a coordinator pedigree longer than one year nor a college network. He played at Baylor, coached tight ends in Philadelphia for two seasons, then joined Baltimore as passing-game coordinator in 2023 before the promotion.

The leverage is Jackson. The quarterback signed a five-year, $260 million extension in April 2023, fully guaranteed through 2025. If a new regime inherits him, they inherit his input. Jackson has praised Doyle by name in four separate press conferences this season, twice citing "trust" and once noting Doyle's willingness to script the first 18 plays of each game rather than the standard 15. Coordinators who move Jackson's resume forward gain his endorsement. Greg Roman, Baltimore's OC from 2019 to 2022, never received a second head-coaching interview after his 2020 cycle. Doyle's system produced the second-lowest sack rate in the AFC (4.1%) and the highest third-down conversion rate (48.3%). Those are owner-friendly statistics.

McVay's hiring reset the market. The Rams went 11-5 his first season, reached the Super Bowl in Year 2, won it in Year 5. Since then, nine offensive coordinators have been hired as head coaches before turning 45. Five lasted fewer than three seasons. The durable ones—Shanahan, Matt LaFleur, Zac Taylor—had apprenticeships under McVay or Shanahan. Doyle worked under Nick Sirianni in Philadelphia, then John Harbaugh in Baltimore. Neither lineage carries the same cache in hiring rooms, but both produce top-10 offenses with regularity. Sirianni's Eagles ranked 6th in scoring during Doyle's two tight-ends seasons. Harbaugh's Ravens ranked 8th or better in four of the last five years.

The record itself holds no monetary value. McVay's Rams deal was reported at $8.5 million annually in 2017, later extended to $15 million-plus in 2022. First-time head coaches now command $6 million to $9 million depending on pedigree and market. Doyle would slot mid-range unless multiple teams bid. The Saints interviewed him January 10. The Bears brought him in January 14. Las Vegas has not confirmed contact, but the Raiders typically favor offensive minds when the roster includes a young quarterback. Aidan O'Connell and Gardner Minshew both remain under contract, neither a long-term answer.

What to watch: Chicago's decision timeline runs through the third week of January, per local reporting. If the Bears pass, New Orleans remains the fallback, though the cap situation limits upside. A darkhorse scenario involves a midseason opening in 2025 if an existing coach stumbles—Doyle's age and availability would make him the obvious replacement rather than an interim promotion. Baltimore would demand compensation under the Rooney Rule's revised guidelines, likely a third-round pick if he leaves for a non-playoff team.

The youngest head coach in NFL history lasted three years. Lane Kiffin took the Raiders job at 31 in 2007, went 5-15, and was fired during the 2008 season. Doyle has one data point Kiffin lacked: Lamar Jackson's phone number.

The takeaway
Doyle's age is the leverage—a decade-long runway if Year 1 works, which is how owners justify risk on first-time hires now.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
