Madubuike clears team drills; Ravens preserve $98M defensive interior through 2027

Baltimore's four-year extension bet returns to full workload with nine weeks until Cincinnati.

Baltimore defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike participated in full team drills this week, head coach Jesse Minter confirmed Thursday, ending a spring absence that had become a quiet concern inside the facility. Minter said he expects Madubuike available for the season opener against Kansas City on September 4.

Madubuike signed a four-year, $98 million extension in March 2024—$48.5 million guaranteed—making him the seventh-highest paid interior defensive lineman in the league. He logged 13 sacks in 2023, second among all defensive tackles, and became the anchor of Baltimore's run defense after the franchise moved on from Calais Campbell. The Ravens restructured quarterback Lamar Jackson's deal twice to create the cap space.

The timing matters because Baltimore opens against Kansas City, faces Cincinnati twice before Thanksgiving, and closes the season with Houston and Pittsburgh. The Ravens allowed 4.8 yards per carry in 2023 when Madubuike missed snaps due to cramps or rotation; 3.9 yards when he played above 70 percent of defensive plays. Defensive coordinator Zach Orr—promoted in January after Mike Macdonald left for Seattle—has built his front around Madubuike's ability to command double-teams on early downs and rush the passer on third.

The extension also locked Baltimore into a specific roster architecture. General manager Eric DeCosta chose interior line over edge rush, letting outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney walk in free agency and drafting edge Adisa Isaac in the third round. The bet assumes Madubuike's production, health, and snap count remain stable through age 29. A significant injury would have forced Baltimore to elevate Travis Jones—a second-year player from Connecticut—into a role the coaching staff considers premature.

Minter's comment eliminates one variable for a front office managing $38 million in dead cap from previous extensions. Baltimore enters camp with $12.4 million in effective cap space, per Over The Cap, and needs to plan for tight end Mark Andrews' next deal and safety Kyle Hamilton's extension window in 2025. Madubuike's availability means the Ravens avoid mid-season scrambling for veteran help at a position where quality depth costs $8-12 million annually.

Watch whether Madubuike's snap count holds above 65 percent through September heat. Minter has not named a rotation partner, and the team brought back veteran Michael Pierce on a one-year, $3.5 million deal. If Madubuike's workload dips below last season's 72 percent average, it signals either load management or something the Ravens are not discussing publicly. Baltimore's first injury report is due August 27.

The takeaway
Madubuike clears team drills, preserving Baltimore's **$98M** bet on interior defense through the AFC North gauntlet.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
