Alvarez skips Atlético training as Barcelona begins €75M summer positioning

The Argentine's absence coincides with renewed Catalan interest, casting doubt on Simeone's Copa final preparations.

Julián Alvarez did not train with Atlético Madrid on Tuesday, a tactical absence that arrived three weeks before the club's Copa del Rey final and four months before Barcelona's expected summer bid. The forward cited general malaise. The timing is noted.

Atlético paid Manchester City €75 million last August. Alvarez has 11 goals in 34 appearances this season, respectable but below the 0.68 goals-per-90 he posted in his final City campaign. Barcelona's sporting director Deco watched him twice in March, once from a private box at the Metropolitano, once in Bilbao. The club is building a file. Atlético's public position remains that Alvarez is not for sale. The private position is that everything has a number, and Barcelona knows this.

The significance is positional, not medical. Barcelona needs a number nine who can rotate with Robert Lewandowski and eventually replace him. Alvarez is 24, South American, and familiar with high-intensity possession systems. He also represents a rare transfer commodity: a player Atlético might sell to a direct rival if the bid is large enough and arrives early enough to allow reinvestment. The club's €200 million summer outlay on Alexander Sorloth, Conor Gallagher, and Robin Le Normand has not produced a title challenge. Simeone's contract runs through 2027, but his influence over transfer policy has visibly narrowed. Sporting director Carlos Bucero is the decision-maker now, and Bucero thinks in terms of asset velocity.

Barcelona's financial position is improved but not repaired. The club registered Dani Olmo in January only after €100 million in emergency asset sales and a favorable court ruling. A summer move for Alvarez would require either a forward sale—Ferran Torres is the obvious candidate, with Saudi interest documented—or another Nike advance against future kit revenue. The latter is more likely. Nike's current deal runs through 2028 and pays €105 million annually. The company has indicated willingness to renegotiate early if Barcelona can demonstrate on-field momentum. A marquee signing helps that case. Alvarez's agent, Fernando Hidalgo, has worked with Barcelona before, most recently on the failed Martínez transfer in 2023. The relationship is functional.

What to watch: Atlético's Copa final against Osasuna on April 26. If Alvarez starts and plays poorly, the narrative shifts. If he starts and scores, Barcelona's opening bid likely arrives the week after, ahead of the club's late-May audit deadline. Simeone's post-match comments will matter. The coach has been careful not to declare anyone unsellable this season, a rhetorical shift from prior years. Meanwhile, Barcelona's summer calendar includes a U.S. tour with four matches in July, useful for unveiling a new signing to American sponsors.

Atlético's accountants are already modeling the scenario. A €90 million sale books a €15 million profit after nine months of amortization, clears €15 million in annual wages, and allows the club to reset its forward line around Sorloth and a younger target. The structure is clean. The question is whether Barcelona can marshal the cash before someone else does.

The takeaway
Alvarez's absence telegraphs summer movement; Barcelona needs Atlético willing to sell domestically, and the financial calendar suggests late May as decision point.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
