The Buffalo Bills announced Joe Brady as head coach on Tuesday, replacing Sean McDermott after seven playoff appearances in eight seasons. Brady, 38, becomes the youngest head coach in the NFL for the 2026 season. He was Buffalo's offensive coordinator for 42 days before the promotion.
Brady's hire follows a 13-4 regular season and a divisional-round exit to Kansas City, the third straight postseason loss to the Chiefs under McDermott. General manager Brandon Beane ran the search internally after ownership signaled they wanted continuity around quarterback Josh Allen, who turns 30 in May and carries a cap hit above $50 million through 2028. Brady called plays for five games in December and January after McDermott dismissed Ken Dorsey mid-season. The offense averaged 28.3 points per game in that stretch, up from 22.1 under Dorsey.
The promotion compresses Buffalo's succession timeline. Brady has never been a head coach at any level. His coordinator résumé includes one full season at LSU in 2019, where Joe Burrow threw for 60 touchdowns, and part of a season in Carolina before being dismissed in 2021. He spent two years coaching quarterbacks for the Bills before the coordinator promotion. Ownership is betting that the existing relationship with Allen, who lobbied for Brady's coordinator hire last summer, outweighs the risk of inexperience. The Bills have three offensive assistants older than Brady, including run-game coordinator Kelly Skipper, 52, who interviewed for coordinator roles elsewhere this winter.
The succession bet matters because Buffalo's championship window is narrowing on the roster side. Stefon Diggs is 33 and due $27.4 million in 2026. Von Miller, 37, is on the books for $18 million. The defensive core that carried McDermott's system is aging in tandem, and the Bills are projected $8 million over the cap before restructures. Brady inherits a team built to win now but will need to install his own staff, a process that typically takes six to eight weeks. Defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier is 64 and has not committed to returning. Special teams coordinator Heath Farwell is drawing head-coaching interest in the FCS.
The timeline also affects sponsor negotiations. New Era Cap, Labatt, and M&T Bank all have deals expiring before the 2027 season, and renewal conversations typically reference coaching stability as a selling point. The Bills are mid-negotiation on a $1.7 billion stadium project with Erie County, and ownership wanted a head coach in place before the March bond hearing. Brady will attend.
What to watch: defensive coordinator hire, expected by mid-October. Allen's contract extension talks, which stalled last spring, will likely resume after the bye week in November. Stadium naming-rights bidding is expected to open in December, and Brady's presence will matter in sponsor pitches. New Era's current deal pays $4 million annually; market rate for a new building in a mid-size market is closer to $10 million.
Brady's first official act was scheduling a three-day minicamp in early October, two weeks earlier than McDermott typically ran it. Ownership is billing this as continuity. The calendar suggests otherwise.
The takeaway
Buffalo promoted its six-week offensive coordinator to head coach, compressing succession risk around a $50M quarterback entering his age-30 season.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
