CAA Pays $750 Million for ICM Partners, Adds 400 Agents and European Sports Book

Creative Artists Agency acquired ICM Partners for $750 million in a cash-and-equity transaction that closes the agency's thirty-month acquisition streak. The deal adds 400 agents to CAA's roster, including ICM's London-based sports division and its independent film packaging desk, which produced three of the last twelve Best Picture nominees.

ICM Partners employed roughly 400 agents across film, television, publishing, and sports when the deal was signed. The firm's sports division, ICM Stellar Sports, represents 160 European football players and maintains commercial partnerships with the Premier League and La Liga broadcast packages. CAA's existing sports practice focuses on North American leagues and Olympic athletes; the ICM book provides immediate Premier League adjacency. ICM's publishing arm, which represents 700 authors including Pulitzer winners, will fold into CAA's existing literary division. The transaction removes one of Hollywood's five remaining major agencies—WME, UTA, CAA, ICM, and Paradigm—from the market.

The merger consolidates pricing power at a moment when streaming platforms are shrinking overall content budgets. CAA now represents an estimated 2,200 clients across all verticals, creating deeper talent benches for package deals. When a studio buys a script, the agency that controls the writer, director, and lead actor extracts higher fees and better backend terms. ICM's independent film relationships—clients include A24-adjacent directors and three Sundance alumni—give CAA more leverage in the prestige film market, where packaging fees have historically been thinner but Oscar campaigns generate branding value. The deal also removes a competitor in the poaching wars; ICM had lured 14 CAA agents since 2019, mostly in television.

ICM Partners has been exploring a sale since spring 2023, when private equity backer Crestview Partners began soliciting bids. The firm's revenue had grown 11 percent annually since 2018 but lacked the scale to compete in sports marketing and brand licensing, two areas where WME and CAA have been acquiring aggressively. CAA's most recent acquisition before ICM was Beanstalk, a brand licensing agency announced the same week; that deal gives CAA infrastructure to monetize athlete and actor intellectual property outside traditional endorsement contracts. The combined CAA-ICM entity will control an estimated 18 percent of Hollywood's above-the-line talent, based on 2023 box office credits, second only to WME.

Regulators are expected to review the transaction under Hart-Scott-Rodino antitrust rules, though agency mergers have historically received quick clearance. The Writers Guild of America, which has opposed packaging fees since 2019, declined to comment on the deal. ICM's senior partners will receive equity stakes in the combined entity; exact percentages were not disclosed. CAA's chairman Bryan Lourd will continue leading the merged firm.

Watch for CAA to integrate ICM's European sports roster into its Olympics practice before the 2026 Milan-Cortina Games, and for the firm to pitch package deals pairing ICM literary clients with CAA directors during the spring pilot season. Three ICM television agents are expected to leave for UTA within sixty days.

The takeaway
CAA's $750 million ICM buy removes a mid-tier rival and adds European sports clients before the next Olympic cycle.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
