Ejiro Evero Takes Carolina After League-Wide Musical Chairs Leaves Him Last Man Standing

The defensive coordinator's second shot comes with a $38M guaranteed rebuild and zero honeymoon period.

Ejiro Evero is the Carolina Panthers' new head coach, filling the tenth and final NFL vacancy after a carousel that moved faster than anyone expected. The 41-year-old defensive coordinator returns to Charlotte—he held the same role there in 2022—with a contract believed to carry $38M guaranteed over five years, per two executives briefed on terms. The hire closes a cycle in which ten franchises changed leadership between mid-December and last week, the most compressed window since 2018.

Evero interviewed for seven head coaching jobs over two cycles and was passed over each time until Carolina ran out of alternatives. The Panthers spoke with 14 candidates, including two college coaches who declined second interviews and one sitting coordinator who withdrew after his team made the conference championship. Owner David Tepper wanted a CEO-type; he got a defensive specialist who has never called plays on the other side of the ball and will now hire his third offensive coordinator in as many jobs. Evero's agent negotiated a staff budget north of $15M, slightly above league median, with authority to retain only special teams coordinator Chris Tabor. Everyone else walks.

The timing matters more than the résumé. Carolina holds the No. 6 overall pick, two second-rounders, and $64M in effective cap space after the Bryce Young trade unwind. Evero inherits a defense that ranked 28th in EPA allowed and an offense that finished 31st in scoring. The coordinators he hires in the next 18 days—before the scouting combine—will determine whether the front office views this as a one-year flip or a three-year build. If Carolina takes a quarterback at No. 6, the clock starts immediately. If they trade down and punt on the position, Evero buys himself a season of patience, maybe two.

The market for veteran coordinators has already thinned. Shane Steichen's former offensive assistant in Indianapolis, Press Taylor, was considered the frontrunner for Carolina's OC role until the Titans hired him last week. That leaves Evero looking at Klint Kubiak (Saints passing game coordinator), Bobby Slowik (Texans OC, who interviewed for two head jobs and lost both), or someone from the Kyle Shanahan tree willing to bet on a third team in four years. The money is there—north of $2.5M annually for the offensive coordinator, which would rank top-five among assistants—but the runway is not. Tepper has fired four head coaches since 2020 and shown no appetite for losing seasons, even in year one.

The defensive side is easier. Evero will call plays himself and promote from within, likely elevating linebackers coach Al Holcomb, who has twice been passed over for coordinator roles. The hiring of a defensive head coach shifts the Panthers' draft priorities: expect heavy investment in edge rushers and secondary, with Dallas Turner or Laiatu Latu in play at No. 6 if they stay put. The offensive line remains the worst in football by pass-block win rate (29th), which complicates any quarterback decision, first-round or otherwise.

Watch the offensive coordinator hire, expected by February 12, and whether Carolina trades back from No. 6. If they deal the pick to a quarterback-needy team—Minnesota and Las Vegas both have capital—Evero gets his runway. If they draft a passer, the seat is warm before training camp. Also tracking: NASCAR ownership group 23XI Racing, co-owned by Tepper's former business partner Curtis Polk, is finalizing a secondary equity raise that includes $50M from a family office tied to Tepper's fund. The overlap is thin but worth logging.

Evero's second act begins with a roster that won five games and a fanbase that stopped showing up in October. The next coordinator announcement will tell you everything you need to know about how long this experiment is supposed to last.

The takeaway
Evero's **$38M** deal buys Carolina's tenth-ranked defense a known quantity; the offensive coordinator hire reveals whether Tepper expects playoffs or patience.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
