Ejiro Evero Returns to Panthers DC Post as NFL's 10-Vacancy Carousel Closes

Carolina locks continuity while rivals rebuild, betting Evero's system survives another coordinator purge.

Ejiro Evero is returning to the Carolina Panthers as defensive coordinator after the NFL's ten head-coaching vacancies settled into their final configuration. The Panthers, who retained head coach Dave Canales through a 5-12 season, are bringing back the architect of a defense that ranked 21st in points allowed and 19th in yards in 2024. The move closes the league's winter hiring cycle and leaves Carolina as the only team in the NFC South running back the same coordinator tandem.

Evero's return follows a predictable pattern: coordinator interviews with the New York Jets and Jacksonville Jaguars produced no offer, and the Saints, Buccaneers, and Falcons filled their defensive posts with external hires. Carolina's front office, led by general manager Dan Morgan, chose continuity over the market's available retreads. Evero, 39, has now held four defensive coordinator posts in five years—Denver, Los Angeles Rams (interim), Carolina twice. His defense improved from 28th to 19th in DVOA between Weeks 1 and 17, a trajectory ownership cited in internal discussions. The Panthers interviewed no external candidates for the role.

The calculation is roster fit, not résumé. Evero installed a pressured-heavy scheme that generated 41 sacks, 7th in the league, despite a secondary that allowed 7.4 yards per attempt. Edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney, 32 and on a one-year deal worth $6 million, produced 9.5 sacks under Evero's fronts. The Panthers owe Clowney nothing beyond March; bringing Evero back signals they intend to retain him or replace him with a similar prototype. Defensive tackle Derrick Brown, entering the second year of a four-year, $96 million extension, had his highest pass-rush win rate (14.2%) under Evero's alignment rules. Continuity here protects $24 million in annual cap allocation.

The risk is stylistic stagnation. Evero's defenses rank 11th, 22nd, 15th, and 19th in points allowed across his four coordinator stops. No unit has finished top-ten. His reliance on zone blitzes and simulated pressures worked in Denver with Patrick Surtain II and Justin Simmons; Carolina's secondary has neither. The Panthers allowed 18 completions of 40-plus yards in 2024, 4th-most in the league. Evero's return without secondary reinforcements suggests the front office believes the 2025 draft—Carolina holds picks 8 and 39—will solve coverage, not scheme.

Watch for edge and secondary spending in March. Clowney's decision window opens February 28; if he walks, the Panthers need a replacement before the draft. Safety Xavier Woods, a one-year stopgap, is also unrestricted. The team has $48 million in effective cap space, per Over The Cap, enough for one marquee free agent or two mid-tier starters. Evero's retention makes veteran cornerbacks—Stephon Gilmore, Patrick Peterson—more attractive than developmental safeties. Expect Carolina to attend the Senior Bowl in Mobile with defensive backs coach Marcus West, who worked with Evero in Los Angeles.

The coordinator carousel closed with ten teams hiring new head coaches and sixteen changing coordinators. Evero's continuity is the minority outcome. Four teams hired offensive coordinators with zero play-calling experience; three promoted from within. Carolina chose the known quantity, betting Evero's system scales with better talent. The draft pick at 8 will test that thesis.

The takeaway
Panthers bring back Evero as DC, the only NFC South team running back both coordinators despite **21st**-ranked scoring defense.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
