Freeling's rookie struggles are normal; the real evaluation begins in Year Two when Carolina decides whether to build around him or replace him.

The Carolina Panthers selected offensive tackle Monroe Freeling with the 24th overall pick in April. By Week 10, anonymous scouts are handing out midseason report cards. Freeling received a C+ from draft analysts surveyed by Pro Football Network, placing him in the middle third of the 2026 first-round class. He has allowed four sacks and committed six holding penalties across 547 pass-blocking snaps, per Pro Football Focus.
The evaluation window matters. Freeling signed a four-year, $13.8 million fully guaranteed rookie deal with a fifth-year option. The Panthers control him through 2029 at minimum, 2030 if they exercise the option by May 2029. His 2026 salary cap hit is $2.9 million. League personnel executives do not make personnel decisions based on half-season grades. They wait for the Year Two coaching tape when protection concepts settle and the guard next to him stops rotating every four weeks.
Carolina's offensive line allowed 38 sacks through ten games, fourth-worst in the NFC. Freeling is the youngest starter on that unit at 22 years old. His left guard has been replaced twice due to injury. The center is learning a new system under the Panthers' third offensive coordinator in three years. Pass protection is a five-man drill, and four of those five are playing below replacement level by EPA metrics. Isolating Freeling's performance in that context is difficult. The holding penalties are his. The blown assignments often involve a missed stunt pickup that began two gaps away.
GM Dan Morgan spent $28 million in veteran offensive line free agency last March, then used the first-round pick on Freeling anyway. That signals a three-year plan, not a one-year fix. The free agents are on two-year deals without clauses after 2027. Freeling is the anchor they are building toward. His development pace determines whether Carolina re-enters the tackle market in 2028 or allocates that capital to edge rush.
Two AFC teams called the Panthers' front office in October asking about Freeling's availability, according to a league source. Both were told he is not being discussed. One was a playoff contender dealing with a season-ending tackle injury. The other was a rebuilding club stockpiling young linemen on cost-controlled deals. Neither offer reached Morgan's desk. First-round tackles do not get traded nine games into their rookie contracts unless the franchise is being dismantled. Carolina is 3-7, not 0-10.
The C+ grade reflects snap count, not projection. Freeling has started every game since Week One. He has not been benched. He has not been rotated out for a veteran in obvious passing situations. The coaching staff is playing him through mistakes, which is how tackles develop. The alternative is sitting him and eating the sunk cost of the 24th pick while a 31-year-old journeyman holds the spot for eight months.
Freeling's college tape at Georgia showed quick feet and inconsistent hand placement. The hand placement issues remain. The quick feet have translated. He is getting beat inside on speed-to-power moves, a correctable problem that requires offseason strength work and better punch timing. The mental processing is ahead of schedule. He has been called for zero false starts, which suggests he is reading defensive fronts cleanly. The penalties are aggression fouls, not confusion fouls.
The fifth-year option decision arrives in May 2029. By then, the Panthers will have three full seasons of tape, plus offseason workouts and training camps. If Freeling develops into a top-15 tackle, the option costs approximately $18 million fully guaranteed for 2030. If he plateaus as a replacement-level starter, they decline and let him walk after Year Four. The midseason grade does not change that calculus. The Year Three tape does.
Carolina's next offensive line investment comes this spring. The Panthers hold two second-round picks in the 2027 draft, both acquired in trades. One will likely be spent on interior line help. Freeling needs a competent guard next to him. The C+ becomes a B+ when the stunt pickups are clean and he is not covering two gaps on third-and-long. That is a roster construction problem, not a scouting miss.
Watch the offseason hiring cycle. If Carolina brings in an offensive line coach with a track record developing young tackles, Freeling's valuation inside the building rises. If they promote from within or hire a retread, the front office is hedging. The 2028 draft class is expected to feature four first-round tackle prospects, per early scouting reports. Morgan will have that option if Freeling's Year Two tape does not improve.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
