McGregor enters Mayweather bout unsponsored; Reebok deal lapsed, fight shorts open

The UFC featherweight's August fight sits outside Reebok's octagon exclusivity, creating a clean-slate inventory play.

Conor McGregor will walk into T-Mobile Arena on August 26 without an apparel sponsor. His six-year Reebok contract, signed when the brand became UFC's exclusive outfitter in 2015, covers only mixed martial arts competition. The Mayweather fight is a boxing match, sanctioned by the Nevada Athletic Commission under different rules. No Reebok swoosh on the trunks. No UFC branding required. Clean canvas.

The gap matters because McGregor's last pay-per-view fight—UFC 205 against Eddie Alvarez—drew 1.3 million buys and generated an estimated $17.7 million in live gate revenue. The Mayweather crossover is projected to exceed 4 million buys at a $99.95 price point, with McGregor guaranteed a $30 million purse before pay-per-view points. Fight week will deliver five press events, three open workouts, and a weigh-in broadcast live on Showtime. Every frame is inventory.

Reebok's UFC deal pays McGregor a flat $40,000 per fight under the promotion's tiered athlete compensation structure, regardless of pay-per-view performance. The brand declined to extend terms for non-UFC competition when the Mayweather negotiation began in March. A Reebok spokesperson confirmed the arrangement covers "UFC events exclusively" and would not comment on extension discussions. McGregor's management, Paradigm Sports, has fielded inbound inquiries from three athletic brands and one spirits company since the fight was announced in June, according to a person familiar with the conversations. None have closed.

The clean-slate opportunity is complicated by timing. Fight week begins August 21. Most apparel deals require 90 days for design, sample approval, and production. A brand signing today would need to air-freight finished goods and hope McGregor's camp approves the fit. The safer play is walkout gear—hoodies, caps, T-shirts—where logo placement requires less athlete input. One brand director, speaking anonymously because his company hasn't publicly pursued McGregor, called the window "tight but not impossible" and noted that fight shorts can be screen-printed in 72 hours if the design is simple.

Mayweather, by contrast, will wear shorts from his own TMT (The Money Team) brand, which he has used since his 2013 fight against Robert Guerrero. He typically places a second brand on his trunks' waistband—Hublot paid a reported $1 million for placement during the Manny Pacquiao fight in 2015. McGregor has worn his own August McGregor suiting line to UFC press events but has not produced fight shorts under that label. His camp has not responded to requests for comment on sponsorship strategy.

The August 26 broadcast will reach an estimated 50 countries. Showtime holds U.S. rights; Sky Sports Box Office holds UK rights at a £19.95 price point. McGregor's Instagram account has 21 million followers; Mayweather's has 16 million. A brand that closes a deal this week would secure logo placement across fight week media, in-ring broadcast exposure, and post-fight social content. The question is whether any brand can move fast enough to claim it.

Watch for a potential announcement during the August 21 Los Angeles press conference, the last major media event before fight week in Las Vegas. If McGregor walks out unsponsored, the inventory value of those empty trunks will be the subject of Monday-morning sponsor calls for his next UFC bout.

The takeaway
McGregor's Reebok deal excludes boxing; August 26 fight week offers unsponsored inventory to brands that can move in 10 days.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
