Harris-Textor Group Tests Market for Crystal Palace at £700M Valuation

Premier League's American ownership wave hits its first major liquidity event since Todd Boehly bought Chelsea.

Josh Harris and John Textor have quietly retained advisors to gauge buyer appetite for Crystal Palace, three years after their consortium paid £185 million for the South London club. Early conversations position the asking price near £700 million, according to two people briefed on the process. That's a 278% markup, roughly in line with what Clearlake and Boehly achieved at Chelsea but significantly above the multiples West Ham and Aston Villa fetched in minority deals.

The sale exploration follows Textor's public tension with Harris over operational control. Textor owns 45% of the club through Eagle Football Holdings, his Lyon-anchored portfolio. Harris, who also owns the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils, holds 18% personally and another 27% through affiliated vehicles. David Blitzer, Harris's usual co-investor, sits on 10%. The structure has been functional but brittle. Textor wanted to buy Harris out last year; Harris declined. Now Harris is testing whether the entire asset moves.

What matters here is timing. Palace finished 11th last season under Oliver Glasner, who arrived mid-year and stabilized a squad that looked relegation-adjacent in November. The club owns Selhurst Park outright, a rarity in the Premier League, and planning permission for a 34,000-seat redevelopment is expected by June. The current capacity is 25,486. That 8,500-seat gap, combined with Palace's location in Zone 4 South London, creates the kind of monetization story American buyers understand. Sponsorship revenue remains underdeveloped: the front-of-shirt deal with cinch pays roughly £4.5 million annually, well below peers.

The buyer profile skews Middle Eastern or American family office. Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund has been methodical about Premier League exposure since the Newcastle acquisition. Palace would offer a lower entry price than the top-six clubs and fewer geopolitical complications than another direct sovereign play. Separately, at least two US-based groups with no current Premier League holdings have requested data room access, per a source close to the process. One is backed by a San Francisco tech family; the other involves a New York private equity principal doing his first sports deal with personal capital.

Textor's position complicates the sale. Eagle Football owns stakes in Lyon, Botafogo, RWD Molenbeek, and Palace. UEFA's multi-club ownership rules prevent the same entity from controlling two clubs in the same continental competition. Textor has been trying to sell his Lyon stake for eight months without success. If Palace sells and Textor retains his 45%, the new controlling owner would need to either buy him out or structure around his Lyon exposure. That's workable but annoying. More likely: Textor exits entirely, takes his proceeds, and refocuses on Botafogo, which just won the Copa Libertadores and offers cleaner governance.

The sale also tests the Premier League's sustained valuation thesis. Bournemouth sold for £120 million in 2022. Everton's £500 million deal with 777 Partners collapsed, but the Friedkin Group recently closed at a higher number. Palace sits between those poles: more established than Bournemouth, less troubled than Everton, worse infrastructure than both. The £700 million ask assumes the stadium redevelopment happens and that broadcast rights hold steady. Sky and TNT Sports are negotiating the next domestic cycle now. If that package drops below £5 billion, mid-table clubs lose 15-20% of valuation overnight.

Glasner's contract runs through 2027. He'll want clarity before the summer window. Palace needs a striker; Odsonne Édouard and Jean-Philippe Mateta combined for 18 league goals last season, which is replacement-level for a team with top-half ambitions. A new owner changes that calculus immediately. If the buyer is serious, the club spends £35-50 million on a forward in July and pushes for Europe. If the sale drags, Glasner starts fielding calls from Bundesliga clubs who need someone after they sack their guy in October.

Advisors expect first-round bids by late March. The sale could close before the summer window or stretch into next season if the price doesn't clear. Either way, Palace is the first major test of whether the 2021-2023 American buying spree can actually exit at a profit.

The takeaway
Harris-Textor asking **£700M** for Palace, testing whether mid-table Premier League clubs still trade at post-COVID multiples.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
