Christian Braun's $82M extension locks Denver into luxury-tax purgatory through 2029

The four-year deal, signed seven months ago, now blocks cap flexibility Denver needs to reload around Jokić's prime.

Denver signed Christian Braun to a four-year, $82 million extension in October. The Nuggets traded Peyton Watson to Oklahoma City for two second-rounders last week. The connection is direct: Braun's contract makes Watson's $19.5 million salary redundant, and Denver cannot afford both while paying Nikola Jokić $63 million, Jamal Murray $46 million, and Michael Porter Jr. $35.8 million this season. The luxury tax apron sits at $189.5 million. Denver is $6.2 million over.

Braun averaged 15.6 points on 47.8% shooting this season, starting 41 games after Kentavious Caldwell-Pope walked to Orlando in free agency. The extension pays him $19.75 million in 2025-26, $21.3 million in 2026-27, $23 million in 2027-28, and $24.6 million in 2028-29. All four years guaranteed. Watson, meanwhile, is shooting 38.4% from three for the Thunder and playing 23.8 minutes per game in a conference finals rotation. The Nuggets kept the starter, lost the swing piece, and now have neither cap room nor a trade chip to address the Russell Westbrook situation. Westbrook makes $3.3 million on a veteran minimum and has started 31 games this season at age 36. Denver has no path to replace him without aggregating multiple minimum contracts in a trade, which requires taking back matching salary. Braun's deal eliminates that flexibility.

The issue is not Braun's production. He is a 46% shooter from the corners and a competent defender against wings. The issue is that Denver paid him like a third option before confirming he could function as one, and the contract landed seven months before the Watson decision arrived. Teams operating above the second apron cannot aggregate salaries in trades, cannot take back more money than they send out, and cannot use the taxpayer mid-level exception. Denver crossed the second apron threshold in December and will remain there through 2027 barring a salary dump. The Porter contract expires in 2027. The Murray contract expires in 2028. The Braun contract expires in 2029. Calvin Booth, Denver's general manager, built a championship roster in 2023 by keeping Jokić's $46.9 million salary off the books until Bruce Brown and Jeff Green left. He has since committed $223 million to Braun, Watson (before the trade), and Zeke Nnaji. Nnaji makes $8.8 million and plays 11.2 minutes per game.

The Watson trade netted Denver a 2026 second-rounder from Orlando and a 2031 second-rounder from Philadelphia. Oklahoma City absorbed Watson's salary into a trade exception created by the Josh Giddey sign-and-trade. The Thunder now have a 22-year-old wing shooting 38% from three on a rookie extension that pays $19.5 million, $21 million, $22.7 million, and $24.4 million through 2029. Denver has two second-rounders and a hole in the rotation behind Porter. The market read this immediately: Denver's championship window is two years, not four. Jokić turns 31 in February. Murray's shooting percentage has declined from 45.7% in the 2023 playoffs to 40.2% this season. Porter has missed 18 games with a strained calf. The Nuggets rank fourth in the West and are 3.5 games behind Oklahoma City.

The Braun contract would be defensible if Denver had retained Watson and moved Porter, but Porter's trade value collapsed after his injury history became a file, not a footnote. Teams inquired about Porter at the February deadline, per league sources. Denver asked for a first-rounder and salary relief. No one paid it. The Nuggets are now locked into a four-man core through 2028, with Braun as the cheapest piece and the least movable. Contracts under $25 million rarely return positive value in trades unless the player is on a rookie deal or shooting 40% from three. Braun does neither. His extension contains no options, no declining years, and no trade kicker. It is a flat, guaranteed $82 million for a player who was never an All-Star candidate and whose defensive metrics rank 47th among starting wings, per Cleaning the Glass.

Denver's next decision point arrives in July, when Russell Westbrook's contract expires. The Nuggets can re-sign him using early Bird rights or pivot to a minimum-contract point guard. Either path leaves them short a rotation wing and over the second apron. The Braun extension does not create that problem alone, but it removes the flexibility to solve it. Calvin Booth signed Braun in October. Peyton Watson was traded in February. The next call comes in four months.

The takeaway
Braun's **$82M** deal removes Denver's trade flexibility through **2029**, leaving them with a narrow championship window and no salary cap path to reload.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
