Jalen Duren Tells Detroit He Wants $287M Before 2026 Free Agency

The 21-year-old center's max demand arrives 18 months early, forcing Tom Gores into a valuation call with zero playoff data.

Jalen Duren has informed the Detroit Pistons he expects a five-year, $287 million maximum extension when his rookie deal expires in 2026. The message came through informal channels this winter, according to people familiar with the conversation, and it puts owner Tom Gores on a clock he wasn't anticipating.

Duren is averaging 11.2 points and 9.8 rebounds this season while shooting 64.1% from the floor, which makes him a top-15 center by most efficiency metrics but not yet an All-Star. Detroit drafted him 13th overall in 2022, traded for him on draft night from Charlotte, and declined his $8.1 million fourth-year option last October to preserve cap flexibility. That means Duren becomes a restricted free agent in July 2026, and Detroit can match any offer sheet. The $287 million figure is the projected maximum for a player with four years of service signing a five-year extension in summer 2026, assuming the cap hits $155 million as the league office currently models.

The problem is timing. Gores has to decide whether Duren is a franchise pillar before the Pistons have made the playoffs with him as the starting center. Detroit is 19-44 this season, fifth-worst in the East, and Cade Cunningham's extension ($224 million over five years, signed last summer) already locks in one max slot. Adding Duren at $287 million would consume roughly $511 million in committed money to two players through 2031, and the Pistons have never paid luxury tax under Gores' ownership. Front-office consensus around the league is that Detroit will either extend Duren this summer at a discount—something closer to $180 million over five years, the Jaren Jackson Jr. structure—or let him reach restricted free agency and force a rival to set the price. The latter option carries risk: if a team like Oklahoma City or San Antonio offers the full max, Detroit either matches and loses negotiating leverage forever, or declines and watches their starting center walk for nothing.

Duren's camp is betting on the center market tightening. Nikola Jokić, Joel Embiid, and Bam Adebayo are locked up. Victor Wembanyama isn't a free agent until 2028. Alperen Şengün will reset the market in 2025, but after that, the only young centers with All-NBA upside entering free agency are Duren and Walker Kessler. If Detroit balks, Duren's agent—Jim Tanner of Tandem Sports + Entertainment—can point to the $224 million Cunningham got and argue that a two-way center who anchors a top-10 defense deserves comparable money. Detroit is currently 22nd in defensive rating, but that's with a backcourt rotation that includes four rookies and three second-year players. Plug Duren into a competent defensive scheme with veterans, and the math changes.

What to watch: Detroit has until October 21, 2025, to offer Duren a rookie-scale extension. If they don't, he becomes a restricted free agent in July 2026. The front office is expected to gauge trade interest this summer, not to move him, but to establish market value. If a team offers two first-rounders and a rotation player, Gores will know Duren is viewed as a cornerstone. If offers top out at one first and salary filler, the $287 million ask becomes harder to justify. Cunningham's agent, Jeff Schwartz of Excel Sports, has already started informal conversations with Tanner about contract stagger—whether Duren's deal should be structured to expire the same summer as Cade's, giving Detroit two max slots to reload, or offset by a year to avoid a 2031 cap crisis.

The Pistons have $63 million in cap space this summer and no veterans signed past 2026 except Cunningham. Duren's max demand, whether Detroit meets it or not, will determine whether that space goes toward building around two foundational pieces or resetting the timeline again.

The takeaway
Duren wants **$287M** by 2026, forcing Detroit to bet on playoff-free projection or let restricted free agency set the price.
