Detroit Tigers Hire Kyle Hendricks as Front-Office Assistant Under Scott Harris

The 36-year-old Cubs veteran joins Harris's analytics-friendly staff as teams chase pitcher-to-exec pipeline.

Kyle Hendricks signed with the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday as a special assistant under general manager Scott Harris, ending a 12-year playing career spent entirely with the Chicago Cubs. The hiring was announced in Atlanta, where the Tigers were opening a three-game series. No contract length or compensation was disclosed.

Hendricks retired in February after posting a 5.92 ERA across 89.2 innings in 2025, his worst statistical season. Over his career, he won 103 games, compiled a 3.68 ERA, and earned an All-Star nod in 2016, the year he posted a 2.13 ERA and finished third in Cy Young voting. He was never flashy—88-mph fastball, dartboard command—but that restraint is why Harris wants him. Hendricks spent a decade optimizing a narrow skill set in the most analytics-heavy pitching lab in baseball.

Harris has been building Detroit's front office with this profile since arriving from San Francisco in 2022. The Tigers now employ seven former players across player development and pro scouting, including former outfielder Ryan Raburn and ex-catcher Bryan Holaday. Hendricks becomes the highest-profile addition, but the role itself is entry-level: special assistants review advance reports, shadow decision meetings, and begin the credentialing process that leads to coordinator or amateur scouting positions within two to three years. Harris ran the same pipeline in San Francisco, where former shortstop Emmanuel Burriss is now assistant director of pro scouting.

The timing matters. Detroit's 26-and-under pitching staff ranked fourth in MLB in ERA+ last season, but the Tigers finished 81-81 and missed the playoffs. Harris has been hunting veteran voices who can translate analytics into field-level language without alienating a young roster that grew up with TrackMan. Hendricks fits: he was among the first pitchers to use Edgertronic cameras in bullpen sessions and routinely discussed pitch design in postgame availability. His Dartmouth economics degree also signals comfort in a front office that runs heavy on Excel and light on ego.

Watch for Hendricks to appear in spring training next February, where Harris typically embeds front-office assistants with minor-league pitching coordinators. The Tigers also have a director of pitching search underway after Chris Fetter left for the Mets in November; that hire will clarify whether Hendricks is being groomed for a development role or a pro scouting track. Detroit's Double-A affiliate in Erie also needs a pitching coach, a common landing spot for ex-players in year two of front-office apprenticeships.

Harris declined to discuss Hendricks's long-term trajectory during Tuesday's pregame availability, but the organizational chart suggests a path. Detroit has promoted four special assistants to coordinator roles since 2022, and all carried playing resumes shorter than Hendricks's. The Cubs, meanwhile, have hired three former players into their front office since Jed Hoyer became president of baseball operations in 2020, including ex-closer Kerry Wood as a special assistant in 2023. Hendricks could have stayed in Chicago; he chose Harris's structure instead.

The hire also lands during Detroit's quiet negotiation window with controllable pitchers. Left-hander Tarik Skubal is entering his final arbitration year, and the Tigers have begun early extension talks according to people familiar with the discussions. Hendricks won't touch those negotiations, but his presence signals to the pitching staff that Detroit values institutional memory. Harris has said publicly he wants more former players in advisory roles, especially those who played under Chicago's Theo Epstein regime, which Harris studied while climbing San Francisco's front office.

Hendricks will report to Detroit's front office in May and travel with the major-league club intermittently through September. His first assignment is expected to involve advance scouting and pitch-sequencing breakdowns, the same entry work Harris assigned to former infielder Josh Harrison when he joined Detroit's staff last August.

The takeaway
Detroit hires Cubs veteran Hendricks as special assistant, extending Harris's pipeline of analytics-fluent ex-players into front-office roles.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable.
